It's been below zero here for over a week and I don't drive the GXP as much in the winter I need to keep the battery charged. My 50 amp starter/charger decided to fail me and since it was over 20 years old I went to Harbor freight to get a new one. While I was there I saw these inexpensive wall wart type chargers hanging there. They are a 12 volt wall plug with some type of charging circuit and alligator clips for batteries. Since I have all the parts at home and being cheap I decided to make one myself, with out the special circuit. Myself and a voltmeter will replace that. It works fine. No more slow starts at -5 degrees. My battery was down to 12.0 volts, plugged this in for a half hour and back to 12.6 volts. Been doing this off an on all week to fight the cold battery voltage loss. The proper ones are on sale with a coupon for $4.99 but this one was free and it works. Just need to keep an eye on the voltage. My junk box wall wart puts out 14.5 volts of DC @ 350ma. The old charger gave up the clips. I used the $5 for lunch instead.

If your battery gained .6 volts in 1/2 hour with *that*, said battery is on death's door.

The one good thing this does is generate heat internally in the battery due to its charging resistance. And it will do that to new batteries too. Don't wear out your hood latch hooking it up all the time.

If thats true I am going to get a new one, I just installed it this summer. It's got a 3 year replacement from O'reillys. The cold is hard on batteries. We only get this sub-zero for a week or two. It should be in the 30's next week, and I won't need the booster. I hate slow starts and this prevents it. I am right under the zero.

Has been 80 here for 2 weeks in a row, altough tonight its dropping to 40 and a high of 60 tomorrow I will have my heat on tonight lol

I've made a few of those from old wal warts. They make a good trickle charger and they would be good for keeping a battery warm in very low temps. For some reason they just quite sometimes.

It's already very cold in So Cal (high was only 58 today and will barely above 60 tomorrow. Even No Cal is too cold for me, not talking about Idaho.
