Divorcing Mobil 1

Meh. I have almost the exact same truck as OP. I used M1 for the first 120K miles. I used Pennzoil Platinum for the next 50K miles. They were out of stock of PP at my Walmart last weekend when I went to buy oil, so I went back to M1. Engine runs the same, sounds the same. It is all good. I change the oil every 6 months/7500 miles. My wife's Hyundai Santa Fe has 185K miles and has gotten the same treatment (M1 and PP). I may go back to M1 the next oil change on hers too just for grins. It is a few bucks cheaper than PP now, so why not? I don't see either of these 10+ year old, almost 200K mile engines having oil-related issues with either product.

I have been using PP and Ultra in most of my newer vehicles but have been using Mobil 1 HM 10W40 in my 1990 Jaguar XJS V12. Actually, will be changing out the 10.5 quarts today with Mobil 1 0W40... Hopefully it works as well or better then the Mobil 1 HM oil. I really do not have any oil drips, so I'm making the change...

LOL if you say so.

...and OVERKILL, lets not swing the pendulum the other way and bash Castrol Synthetics, only because it's 'Dusty Rhodes' lube of choice.

Oh, I'm not bashing Castrol, I think it is the factory OCI length that is the issue, as I alluded to. BMW seems to feel that a bit of varnish is OK. Engines run on the same oil, but at reduced OCI's, don't appear to get the build-up. That doesn't mean there isn't an oil that would last the factory OCI without deposits, and that product could also be a Castrol product, it would just seem the particular Castrol lubricants used by BMW and Audi, in these applications, lead to some varnish build-up that the OEM's deem acceptable.

OP, you are not allowed to use anything other than Mobil 1 once you have stated, until you can furnish others, on this Mobil funded board, a valid reason that THEY will accept why you should try any other branded oil. And believe me, they'll make an excuse for every single justification you try to make. Therefore they will never accept your desire to use another of the many many brands of oil out there. Therefore you can never stop using M1.

"either you are with us, or you are with the enemy"
"more engine noise? it's because you're biased and your ear is invalid; not scientifically calibrated, therefore you are incapable of hearing any more or less noise*
"burns out quickly? well your engine is worn, you need to u se the product 7 times in succession before you can draw a conclusion, which will undoubtedly be that the engine is worn"

Welcome to the twilight zone, would you like a T-shirt?

I'd be willing to bet that if we had the resources and tested say 5 different "synthetic" engine oils of he same viscosity in identical vehicles in the same location under similar conditions with the same maintenance schedules rotated among the 5 test drivers for 10 years and 150K miles a tear down would show that all the oils did a great job and there would only be minor differences of no consequence on inspection. This test would prove that not only are these oils excellent but that cars are getting better every year in spite of all the regulations and restrictions.

Royal Purple has recently won me over in all of my vehicles over Mobil-1. Since Walmart is now carrying it. I tried it & immediately noticed a much smoother & quieter running motor in all my vehicles. Yes it a bit more expensive but the $10.00 more for a 5-quart container over Mobil-1 at wally world is not going to kill me! Luv Royal Purple!

Why is it so disliked on here? Is there a particular aspect to it that they think is bad, or is it simply that it is more expensive for no real benefit over M1 or PU/PP?

EXACTLY. Doug Hillary has posted on this ad-nauseum. When he spoke to Porsche Engineers about this very subject that was basically the answer he was given. Any approved oil in the appropriate grade will perform as expected; all the approved lubricants offer comparable performance.

Noise lever is irelevent in a fashion .its the kind of noise that Mather.and I doubt many recorded problematic sound from good sound.average mechanic might be able to discern a problem but most just can't unless its to fix and issue .any ever try ed to do preventive sound diagnostic?might need an app that can compare sound .but a if you can hear the difference between invariant tsc enabled PC and disabled invariant tsc PC sound?odds are you can detect a coming issue.another thing to take into consideration when diagnosing an engine is this:oil pressure gage.is it steady?or does it go up and down slightly.most would ignore this.you shouldn't.its a sign that some debris somewhere in the oil gallery is plugging up slightly
And pressure vary (usually happen before water temp or oil temp reach 100

Exactly!

Not to mention that Hyundai's factory fill is not Total, it's SOPUS. Kia? Yes, Total is what's used.

Answer my question. I posed it to you. I did not ask for additional questions on irrelevant vehicle brands.
