10 micron particles will flow through and automotive oil system and cause little wear. Guess that's why modern engines last so long

Your point may be the translation to an automotive engine system vs a hydraulic system. I would guess automatic transmissions need a cleaner oil, and not being subject to air flow (and thus not needing air filtration), probably don't have near the dirt of an engine oil in use.

A closed hydraulic system has little relevance to an engine or a transmission. Our service trucks were all driving their equipment hydraulically for years, filtration was the only thing needed.

No oil changes for a decade or more! Huge excess capacity, light loading, and no combustion by products meant the oil stayed clean virtually forever in our application. With a modern synthetic oil and our newer more effective filters I'm sure it would be much better now.

An auto trans, while essentially an electronically modulated hydraulic system, still sheds VASTLY more materials into its oil, and mostly in the earlier part of its life.
