Dirty rotten banjo bolt

99 Jeep Grand Cherokee. New rotor, pads, calipers. Old banjo bolt new washers. I went through 4 or 5 different washers before I could get it stop leaking. Anyone else ever had this problem?
 
They were new on both sides of the brake line. In fact everything but the brake lines and the banjo bolt were new. I found thick enough washers finally. I wonder if the new caliper banjo bolt holes were machined a bit different.
 
It also seems if the brake hose end was not positioned properly it could be held by a ridge and not able to seat properly.

Didn't the caliper come with a new pair of washers?
 
Yep. Those washers leaked, the only lip points away from the caliper. I don't know how many sets of brakes I have done over the years, but this is the first time I have has this happen. Didn't leak on the head of the banjo bolt side, just the side where the break line sits on the caliper.
 
Were they aluminum washers? That's really the only time I've ever had a hard time getting them to seal. There was once where the caliper was really corroded and another time when there was a nick in the machined surface.
 
I always reuse old banjo washers when possible. New ones usually leak. Either way, my snap on 3/8 impact makes sure they don't leak.

Eric funny you should mention that. I could not get one dang cooper one to seal. I put the aluminum ones on and presto. Have never seen it like that. Rebuilt calipers, clean as can be. If I could have gotten a new banjo bolt I would have. No one in town, I didn't check the dealer, had a banjo bolt for a jeep.
I did have to tighten it a bit more than what I am generally comfortable with, but no leaks now.

That maybe the stupidest thing I have read on this board to date. The Jeep has close to 200,000 miles. Not my Jeep, not a Jeep guy. A buddies Jeep, poorly maintained. It need new calipers, happens to any car. Crawl back in your hole. I wish this board had a no holds bared sections like some of the sites I go to. I am tired of being passive aggressive.

No banjo bolt needed, because your car will burn.
 
Yep, American branded cars sure suck. That's why you see so many old ones still on the road. Where are all those classic Japanese cars? FWIW I always replace the flexible rubber hose that goes to the caliper when replacing a caliper because a bad hose can show the same symptoms of a stuck caliper.

I wanted to, but they are long and it looked like a pain. Not my Jeep not my decsion. It would have taken a while.
The rest of the Jeep is done. Very poor maintenance over it's life. I feel sorry for the thing. Still runs good, but now it needs a radiator. I just think they need to move on, it should not be their primary car anymore.

I bet those Honda dealers have plenty of automatic transmission rebuild parts around.

I had the same problem on my ZJ last year when i was replacing my calipers. The copperwashers that came with the new calipers was very thin compared to the old ones and i could not get it to stop leak.
I ended up reusing the old washer after i had used a propanetorch to heat them until they were glowing red and then letting them cool down again.
After that it finaly stopped leaking brakefluid.

Heating up copperwashers so that they are redhot makes them soft again after they have cooled down.

Yes

I now buy the oem washers when I change Calipers, the rebuilt calipers now come with either the incorrect washer( wrong ID or OD) or they are not thick enough.

Per the Honda comment, yes Honda uses everything better
