Hi All. Vehicle is 2025 CX5, Skyactive 2.5 Non-turbo. Im sure this has been asked but not sure for this particular engine.

Manual calls for 4.8 quarts of oil when changing filter, which is EXACTLY what I put in on the first oil change.

OIl level on dipstick reads EXACTLY in between the dots of L-------F. Manual SAYS oil level should fall between two dots, but kinda vague. Feels like the dipstick wants a little more.

So who is more PRECISE? The manual or the dipstick? Am I a tad low or just right?

Thanks

I would say you’re best to use the dip stick.

Also note that the manual says to warm the engine to normal operant temp, then let the oil drain back for 5 minutes after shutting it off. Then check the level.

I couldnt ask for a better , clearer response. Thank you!!! Im guessing you think it should be closer to the "F" or the top dot and not in the middle?

This is always a little confusing, and I think those suggested amount is a rounded down figure modt of the time. I know times when it took up to 10% more to reach the "full", mark on the dipstick.
That being said, you don't have to hit the full mark, especially if your vehicle is not consuming oil

Dipstick, mines the turbo though and I drain it a long time and it definitely takes over 5 quarts to put it on the F mark. So if ya drain it good at minimum it should be able to take at least 5 quarts to hit the Full line.

My Daughters 2022 CX-5 is tough to get a proper reading. I recently did the first oil change and out in 5 quarts, which put the reading about 2/3 between the dots.

I’ve read the turbo holds a bit more than the NA version.

I do a long drain. I look over everything as it’s draining, so it gives me the chance to take my time. When I go back to install the drain plug and new filter, it’s barely dripping. I just do the whole 5 quarts and call it done. It’s still a hair below the top hole at that.
If done at a dealer or a quick lube, you know it’s closed up before it’s drained as much as it would at home. (Unless you’re in a hurry.) That may be the difference in 0.2 quarts in itself. 🤔

I took it to the dealer for the first oil change. They filled it way past the full mark. Maybe added 6 quarts. If I looked at the dipstick after someone else changed the oil, I would expect they fill it to the mark or I would feel like they did a bad job. I wonder how they explain that to a customer.

So, been down this road in my 2023 Mazda 3 and my 2024 Mazda CX-5. Same engines.

I put in a full 5 quarts with a new filter. Start it up. Check for leaks. Put cover plate back on bottom. Roll it off ramps. Let it warm up. Shut it down. Wait 5 minutes. Check level. Usually just over half-way between L and F. Which, from what I read, is what Mazda wants. I just can't.....

I add about .2 - .3 more to bring it to the F mark.

It really is bizzare how Mazda does it. Funny thing, from what I have read on this exact topic on Mazda forums, they fill it to the F line if you take it to them for an oil change, so...yeah. When I got my Mazda 3, it was a dealer loaner vehicle with 4K on it. They changed the oil when I bought it. When I got home, I checked oil and it was probably an 1/8" ABOVE the F mark.

This is why I'm not a fan of 10-minute oil changes. You'd be lucky if they put a new washer on it, if they even put one back on at all.

While not a Mazda, I just recently changed the oil in my sister-in-law's "New to her" 2021 Subaru Forester. It was supposedly serviced at the dealer. It has a little over 60k on it, and the crush washer that I removed from the drain plug still had black paint on the edges. It had never been changed out in 4-5 years, 60k miles.
