Dino suggestions for Eaton Posi/GM 10 bolt

Thanks for clearing that up Jim.

I really did not think that if a GL-5 or others were specified that they could disclude synthetics. The friction modifiers for posi's and other suregrip's modifies the GL-5 for the clutch packs.

Really, why would synthetics be more slippery than dino's? You still need to put friction modifiers in synthetics for posi's. I am looking forward to MolaKule's reply to the dino theory...

as of last year, when I bought the Eaton for the Ford 8.8, they included a card that stated the need for mineral based oil...and they gave GM part numbers for their 80W90 and also the LS additive.

I've known 10-11 sec mustangs to run this mineral based oil and 60-70 passes later on slicks, the eatons are still going strong.

I've been using the mineral based GM oil with no problem, so IMO, there is no need for synthetic in this situation...

btw, i am a proponent of using Red Line 5W30 in my engine. So cost isn't an issue.

This is getting really confusing. They include cards in their products saying to use only dino and then their aftermarket sales manager says syn is Ok. Silver281GT, could yo tell us what that card actually said.. a direct quote?

I wonder if it's because the Havoline dino is the only gear oil they've bothered (or ever will bother) to test in this unit (much like Tremec with their T56 trans claiming to use Havoline Dex 3).

That's a bullseye, I think, 'Driver! A followup conversation yielded just such info. They only list what they actually have tested and there is a big info gap on lubricants.

Yeah sure: (from eaton)

"IMPORTANT APPLICATION NOTE"

" It is strongly recommended the Eaton Posi LSD you have purchased be installed using a Mineral Based 80W90 Gear Oil (GM# 1052271) and a 4 oz. bottle of Limited Slip Additive (GM# 1052358). The Eaton Posi LSD is not recommended to be used with synthetic gear oils.

Be sure to visit our website @ www.traction.eaton.com for more information on your purchase of what we believe is the best limited slip differential on the market."

Love the cap. letters in the text on the card from eaton.

I just emailed Eaton to please be more specific...sine i am a customer of theirs, they might be more inclined to respond with more specifics.

I will post the email when I get word.

An I just sent you info to the aforementioned aftermarket sales manager AND an engineer at Eaton. We'll see! Thanks for passing this along!

Thanks, unDummy. I've seen it and quoted from it earlier. We're trying to go beyond that rather dated info. What I was told recently is that Eaton hasn't done much lubricant testing. Or at least they haven't published much about it if they have. I have two company "inside" contacts and we'll compare their stories to what Silver281Gt gets from his customer inquiry to see what comes of it. This all is probably a monumental waste of time. It's almost a certainty that syn works just fine. Still, it'll be nice to see how Eaton responds to a "multi-pronged attack" on their corporate information system. Stay tuned.

one other thought...tremec transmissions suggests a mineral based ATF for their manual trannies b/c there is some kind of chemical reaction supposidly with the blocker ring material and an adhesive that is used in the trans.

Synthetics according to Tremec have an adverse effect on these carbon components...maybe there is something to Eaton's suggestion.

On the flip side, I contacted Dave at Red Line, and he made the comment that D4 ATF is 100% SAFE for tremec trannies (this suggests that Tremec's reason for suggesting a mineral based Dexron III/Mercon V is due to the fact that this is all that they have tested (along with GM synchromesh and Mobil 1 ATF).

Anyway, back on topic (sort of); has anyone used the Silkolene BOA 90LS gear oil (who'd a thunk they would ever make a non synthetic product??!). Just curious for any feedback, as the spec sheets are on the way via snail mail. So I guess right now I'm looking at/considering the Torco RGO, Silkolene BOA 90LS, Lakewood/Champion BFL, and someone on LS1 Tech suggested Schaeffer #209A 140 wt.?? (Could only use this in the summer months though.)
