Dino Oil - HTHS ratings?

OK, so I've been reading and searching various topics here today - interesting stuff!

I just bought a new Toyota FJ Cruiser. It has the same engine as the 4Runner - the 4L V6. Spec is for a 5W30 oil.

I intend to move to synthetic at 5000 miles; for now, sticking with conventional oil.

I saw the sticky re: the stats on most of the oils. I also read the sticky on HTHS. I noticed that most of the conventional oils listed in the stats thread did NOT have HTHS numbers listed.

Why not? Is this test only done on synthetics?

And if it is conducted on conventional oils, how can I find the HTHS stats on the Chevron Supreme/Havoline, the M1 Drive Clean Non-Synthetic, and the Valvoline All-Climate Motor Oil? (These are the top contenders for the 5W30 non-synthetic options).

And congrats on a very nice motor( I just bought a 2006 Taco with the 1GR-FE. Most engine oils of the recomended grade for the engine ( 5w30 ISLAC GF-4 SM)will have an HTHS between 3.0 and 3.2


I have run synthetics before and have decided to stick with Convewntional engine oils and the 5k intervals using LC to control any possible oxidation and to keep the engine clean(Most cost effective in my opinion).

Good Conventionals at a great Price include Exxon Superflo, Tropartic, Havoline/chevron, Pennzoil/QS, Catstrol GTX, whichever is least expensive at the time and place of convenient purchase.


As far as synthetics, if they meet all the same above specs th4e HTHS will not vary between Conventional and synthetics.
