I am really trying to make my cars last. In no way do I want a bunch of dumb responses with flames attached. Humor is fine. Please don't be nasty!

I have used Amsoil (0-30 and 5-30) for over 20 years and always changed oil and filter at one year or 10,000 miles whichever came first. Somehow, as I age, my guts are telling me that 10K is too long and that 1 year is too long. Maybe not the oil itself but maybe the filter...

My point is if I go back to 3-5K OCI's, would I be better off with a good old fashioned dino with 3 oz of ARX? Would I be "breaking even"?

By the way, I just finished the cleaning phase on all 5 of my cars with ARX. I am currently using Amoil OE and I know the answer to my original question in my subject header is "No".

I like both Amsoil and ARX. Please "Say unto others as you would say to yourself."

If you're going to go back to conventional oil, in most cases 5K is just fine. The AutoRX would be a waste of your money.

For cleanliness, I would prefer a shorter OCI. Even if I have to go with a less costly oil.
I'm no fan of ARX (product or company). I have had much better results with a MMO flush during the last 1k of an OCI (I have only done this the one time with 500cc of MMO)

Just my honest opinion.

You've been using some fine motor oil in your engine(s)to make it last. Chances are: your engine is going to outlast your vehicle's autobody and/or transmissions and the likes.

No need to resort to using any cleaners, OTC additives, etc. to make it last.

Q.

If you have had no problems with your routine dont change now.The oil and filter you are using will go 10,000 miles. There is really no need to go back to 3-4000 mile changes. You know from being on here that any name brand oil will go alot farther than it used to.If you want to change your oil sooner for piece of mind,I suggest only going back to 8000 miles. You will be plenty safe at that time.

If cleanliness is your concern, I would start by determining how clean the engine is now...if it's clean, well, then why change what you're doing?

As an example, my wife's 2002 XC needed the oil cooler o-rings changed at 135K. Got a great view into the sump, which was clean as a whistle. Bought the car at 90K, unknown what the PO used, but I've been using M1 and PU on a 7500 mile OCI. UOA supports a longer OCI for that car as well, so it's very likely that your car is fine with what you've been doing.

Ok, here's something that bothers me. In 2 of my cars after I had completed the rinse phase of ARX, I changed the oil to Eneos. I wasn't expecting anything as I started them up but I know the engines idle quieter. I am attributing that to switching to the Eneos. My '98 LS400 and my '01 Acura Integra GSR are both quieter. This tells me all oils are not the same. Understand, my engines weren't knocking and rattling to begin with. All I know is they are quieter. This is why I'm thinking of doing a little changing around.

Dino + ARX = Synthetic?

Water + dirt = mud

From the UOA other people have posted, there is nothing wrong with running Amsoil to 10K. There is also nothing wrong with running dino to 5K.

You shouldn't need ARX.

[opinion]
Amsoil is a very good oil, but it isn't needed.

ARX may be good, but it isn't needed.

Don't mistake the quietness to mean it's cleaning better or working better, as that may or may not be true. However, many long-time bitogers use that very criteria when picking an oil, and there is usually no harm in doing so.

For what it's worth, I'm a synthetic user, but the cleanest engine I have ever seen used a conventional oil that did not include any additives.

I'll start off by saying, keep doing what you're doing. Motor Oil is only getting better, and more advanced, while your engine is not, it's simply racking up the miles as you drive it...unless of course you have modded it in some way or another...lol.

Have you seen your crankcase? Does it look dirty? If you have, and it was clean, I wouldn't change a thing.

neat-o. I'm guessing by "did not include any additives" it was not a "Non Detergent Oil"....or was it? lol, now that would be scary

Curious, what the oil was...or, point me to a topic on the subject, as to not derail this thread?

But bottom line, you've gone this far using boutique oils, I'd keep up with it.......now, if it's the price/money that is becoming the problem, I'd say maybe "step back" a bit, and move down towards, say, a Mobil1, QSUD, or other "bargain" synthetic, matched with say, a Bosch Distance, or FRAM XG filter.....

10K is NOT a long oil change interval o a synthetic, espcially not a good one like Amsoil.

I'd keep doing the 10k Amsoil changes.
