I've dinged up quite a few fram ultras just with my hands putting them on hand tight. Never had a problem. I've also dinged them up using my strap wrench. The corner of the hallow square put's a small dent in it sometimes even just tightening it up just a smidge more than what I can do with my scrawny little hands. I think those ultras are really thin metal to be honest. I've just never had on at the bottom like this one

I was talking about the leaf spring, if it has one. Leaf spring and a bypass valve are two different things. Some bypass valves are located in the leaf spring, like seen in many Fram filters. Some filters like Purolator have a leaf spring, but the bypass valve is part of the end cap instead of the leaf spring.

I think it has a spring that's in the middle of the dome like you described. I also did not hear anything rattle around when I shook it. I looked at a youtube video that cut the filter open. It has a coil spring. I think it's okay. That ding may have pressed the endcap up just a smidge, hard to tell. Not sure if that matters, but I don't see anything that's going to cause any failure. I also don't think it has glue holding the endcap against the filter like I thought which was my concern that possibly the glue could have broken off, but that's not the case here. There isn't any.

Yeah, it's probably fine since it has a coil spring and not a leaf spring. The only other remote possible failure point is that it could start leaking if the can is thin and the metal got creased enough to cause a stress riser and crack from repeated pulsations during use.

What do these springs do?

A leaf spring does the same thing as a coil spring in the dome end of the can. An oil filter will use either a leaf spring or a coil spring. They both put a force on the media cartridge and ADBV in the can to keep it all tight inside the can.
