My g/f is looking for a new camera in the under $100 range. Any recommendations? Walmart has a huge selection but deciding which one is very hard. She wants one that will take somewhat great up close pics for the price she wants to pay.

That depends on how great you need your up close to be. I caught a Canon PowerShot A2300 on sale from B&H Photo Video for under $100. It's a good camera but I haven't tested it for anything specific. I wanted a point and shoot to carry around. My DSLR is for the special shots.

For all photography equipment, I suggest B&H if you are ok with mail order. They ship fast, have good prices and they actually exist in NYC as a normal walk-in store.

+1 and they take pretty nice photos too as you can tell by this shot from my Canon Powershot from the Honolulu Zoo:

very similar. I would probably get the Canon as it appears to be discounted more than the Nikon. I've got the Digic 4 chip in one of my cameras. it does very well. the Nikon has a slightly better optical zoom range but hardly noticeable. If it matters, the Nikon is smaller and easier to carry in a pocket or purse.

TomCat beat me to it; I agree with his thoughts.

2010_FX4, is that the same camera you use to take pics of your cut open filters?
My g/f wants the new camera but I threw in the "up close pics" part for me.

Haha...no; I am using my mobile phone. I think these cameras will do a much better job than that

I too am a solid Canon fan but the Nikon seems to be a better value. Were it my choice I would still buy the Canon.
