Wife is determined to get me a digital book device.

School me on these.

Kindle, Pandigital, Sony...

Do they share a common format? What do you have?

Do you have to pay subscription fees (yuck).

How about books that have maps?

My wife has the Barnes & Noble Nook and loves it. I've read a little on it and it's easy to read. She can even check books out from the library on it and buy from other sources. I don't think the Amazon Kindle allows either. Not sure about other e-readers. No subscription fees, just buy what you want when you want.

My wife has a Kindle - it's great, but you can tell it's from Amazon.com - mostly support for their web store. Of course it does read PDF's and a few other common formats. Plus it plays mp3's as well.

The only real quirk i've noticed is the advertised storage (in books) vs. how much you really store on them - quite a filesize difference.
