Different sized filters for the same car ...

Thanks - I'm glad I asked! I just wonder why Pentius doesn't show it as a fit on their website?View attachment 299953

Nor does it show as a fit when you look at all of the cars this specific filter fits. Not doubting you, just wonder why Pentius doesn't show it, or how somebody like me would ever know this filter worked on my car.

Only reason I knew was from Fram and other companies that list the 7317 for my Subaru. My guess is that they are coming out with a specific Subaru filter like PG has. Probably a PLXL 4615.

That's it! I knew there had to be some difference. I see where the Pentius bypass valve is set at 13 psi, while the MicroGard Select is 27 psi and CarQuest Premium is 20-30 psi. Thank you!

Also explains why Fram and others use the 7317 for Subaru and Honda/other imports. Where as PG have specific Subaru filters(a better option).

Probably because the 7317 sized filter isn't speced for that engine. It's probably more like a 6607 sized filter. People run the 7317 as an "over-sized" filter in place of the 6607. And yes the difference in bypass valve setting could also be a factor.

@ZeeOSix Yes, liquid is incompresable but that is what I know from some famous tunner for NSX and GTR video I watched years ago. Probably the flex of the metal casing of the filter also contributes
Think I've seen this claim before, but without some valid test data I'd have to say it doesn't really matter. One thing you don't want is a too small of oil filter on a race engine unless it's just a 40u steel screen style of filter so that the dP vs flow isn't too high for an engine constantly near redline.

I agree, it was just based on a Japanese dude/tuner in a youtube. No number, not too meaningful for me either. That's why I do not worry putting bigger/longer filter in passanger cars (Camry, RAV4, Accord, etc.).

I remember back in the day (early to mid 2000s) that the 3593a was talked about a lot as an oversized option for the 7317 (if it fits with clearance). Is anyone still using a 3593a in place of a 7317?
