DIFFERENT OILS AND NO FILTER ON ENGINE

Yeah, if a filter is really restictive, it will just go into partial bypass mode. The resistance of the filter material should have no effect on the flow rate. Was any difference in oil pressure noted with the different filters?

Another thing to consider is that 25% PAO is not enough to make a difference in wear numbers. I have never seen any type of research showing what percentage of base stock has to be synthetic to begin to see the advantages. I always thought that 25% was about price point!

I am woundering how 5W30 Redline would do in this mule?? Seeing how it has done so well in Toyotas and we know that you car likes 5W30.

Bob, is that really you? I'm guessing you're feeling a lot better. Great to have you back!

Good results. I'll be dumping the Red Line outta my 2.5L Nissan this spring and switching to that very same oil for the rest of spring and some summer. I'll post both results.

When you say "no filter," do you mean no air filter?

JB, I remember seeing a study from years ago which showed an "iceberg principle" which means that 20% PAO input gave 80% of the benefits of synthetic. Flow properties, probably.

Bror,
Bob removed the oil filter and installed a block-off plate.Repeat:There was NO oil filter.

Hey BOB!!! This is great news....
Let me get this straight as I had heard about your tests from other members....this is the results from NO filter whatsoever? Did you just plate off the oil filter or pulled media out of one? I can't believe that this is all there is with NO filter. I mean, it has better results than some used oil analysis with filters. In conclusion (sort of) if we let our filters get clogged up to run on bypass mode, then we wouldn't have to ever buy filters again, just change out the oil every 3.5 to 4K.

Schmoe ,
Bob had a block-off plate on his engine.Flow is what Bob wanted to maximize. He wants to install his bypass filter ASAP.
I'm hoping he'll post again soon.

The wear numbers look like they've tripled compared to the previous runs with an oil filter though. Look at how much more iron and lead this latest report shows compared to the previous two reports.

It is so awesome to see you posting again Bob!

Sweet... Bobistheman

Metals did go up slightly though, as Patman said... But when were miles put on and sample pulled? I.e. was driving environment comparable to past used oil analysis?

normal before going abnormal is
normal range abnormal

iron 100ppm 100-250
copper 40ppm 40-100
chrm 40ppm 40-100
alum 40ppm 40-100
lead 100ppm 100-200

good to be back

Bob, from what I understand the oil anaylsis machines only read particals under 4 microns. Should a partical count be run with an oil filter ,without an oil filter ,then with the bypass only? This would show the whole picture of how filtration works . Just a thought.

Bob, I am glad you pulled through! I am sure that as time goes on you will regain more fine motor skills. THe site simply was not the same without you!!!
