Difference between a Motorcraft oil filter, and Motorcraft oil filter with a Walmart designation

Engine- Ford 6.7L powerstroke diesel, 2024.

Looking at OEM oil filters, discovered for 2024 apparently Motorcraft makes a Walmart version, few a few dollars more. Of note the 2019 and 2024 use the same filter, yet the walmart version is not offered for the 2019 powerstroke.

FL2124S- standard OEM version, $19.28 USD

FL2124SW- OEM walmart version, $23.79 USD

Fascinating.

OT but related....the Motorcraft 910 filters for my MZR engined Fords was $3.97 at Walmart just 2 years ago....it's approx. doubled in price. I also remember when Motorcraft syn-blend 5w20 was a screaming deal at WM....that's no longer the case either. I don't buy either their filters or oil anymore for this reason.

The "W" added to the part number might stand for something else, not "Walmart". The same letter would be a coincidence. Ford added "S" to certain oil filters when it introduced shorter versions, so maybe the "W" means some other change.

I am not certain but because they list two different prices for that FL2124S (single or in a 12ct. case) I bet that the price difference is how the product is packaged. If you by the cheaper filter you might just get a filter with no packaging. If you buy the higher priced SW it might come in a nice Motorcraft box.

If you have the need you should buy one of each and see what you get.

The B12 verson of the FL-2124S comes in this generic brown box and not the usual red one that is meant for retail sale. The other B-12 numbers like FL-500SB12, FL-820SB12, FL-910SB12, and FL-2062-AB12 are just loose filters in a box. We use those in the shop because A, they are cheaper and B, less waste.
