Difference between Mobil 1 5W-40's?

2009 Smart, Dealer put in a Mobil 1 5W-40.

Ran terrible, like a truck with a blown turbo.

There are two Mobil 1 5W-40's,
the Turbo Diesel Truck
and the
Mobil 1 ESP Formula M...

What are the differences in the two?

Changed it out to Castrol Edge 5w30, gold bottle
 
The truck oil is much thicker and has higher ash levels. The ESP is much thinner and would suit a modern fuel efficient car. It also has lower ash to be kinder to the cat.

T&D has a richer add pack, AFAIK:

ESP is a low-saps oil for modern diesel emission equipment:

And if it was an MB dealer, then most likely they've used something yet different: M1 Formula M 5w-40 (non ESP), which is kind of in between the above two:

It's not a lot heavier, just somewhat due to it's lower VI but both are inappropriate for the Smart car.
The light 5w30 PCMO is a much more suitable choice.
 
That's way to thick of an oil for a Smart IMO.

I've found that smaller, low power/torque engines like oils with higher VI's.

They're stocking it for MB's diesel engines (bluetec). AFAIK, our diesel is low sulfur (somewhat).
 
What does the SMART spec in the manual? A 30w or a 40w? I know in my VW it specs for 5w40 and I have Mobil 1 0w40 in it right now. Cant tell any difference from it vs the Pennzoil Ultra 5w40 I had in it prior. What I found amazing and correct me if I am wrong, but the Mobil 1 0w40 is a little lighter than the Pennzoil Ultra 5w40 at start up, but a tad thicker at 100C which I thought was pretty important for a turbo charged car. The SMART runs a 3cyl Mitsubishi Turbo charged motor if I am not mistaken? So check what the manual states to use. Go from there.

It's 229.5. And no, 229.51 did not replace 229.5. 229.5 is a gasoline engine spec, while 229.51 is a diesel engine spec, so the two serve different purpose/market.

But you should know that KV100 spec's tell you more about an oil's chemistry than anything else and don't correlate well with operational viscosity. These two oils do have very much different chemistries.
Pennzoil Ultra has a HTHSV of 3.88cP with a 166 VI (IIRC) while Mobil 1 has a HTHSV of 3.8cP and 185 VI plus being a 0W oil will therefore be lighter at all oil temp's below 150C.

Is that the Pennzoil Ultra SN formulation? Because the SM was much lighter than Mobil 1 0w40 in KV40/100 and HTHSv

Operational as in dynamic viscosity?
