My maintenance schedule recommends 96,000 km ATF drains and 32,000 km drains for the transfer case and diff.

I don't do any towing and I recently changed the diff and transfer case fluid to Amsoil 75w90. I plan on changing it out every 48,000 km. Is this too often or too late?

I also recently drained the ATF and refilled it with Toyota T-IV. Should this last to 48,000 km considering the manual states 96,000km?

Why would Toyota recommend such infrequent maintenance for the transmission and such frequent maintenance for the diff & transfer?

If you looked thro these forums the preferred OCIs for ATF is 15K miles (drain/fill) and 30K mile (flush) and for gear oils it is 30K miles.

Now Toyota and many others recommend quite infrequent change intervals, it is left to the imagination of the owner if he/she intends to follow them or be proactive in PM (w the 60K warranty given by Japanese auto makers, you are better off with aggressive PM as recommended in the forum).

Finally it comes to the seminal question regarding PM -- Do you plan to own the vehicle beyond warranty, if yes, then the owners' manual is not enough, if no, then don't bother sitting on this forum. Just chill out.

maximaguy explained it perfectly. I don't want to comment on at's but transfer cases are pretty easy on oil and don't require too much as it is, so pm is drop the oil at a reasonable schedule. I do mine at 30k when I do the manual trans.

I was speaking in metric but i will now be speaking in imperial.

So 15k for ATF drain and 30k for pan drop, is that for dino oils or all ATF fluids? What if I were to use Amsoil ATF in place of the Toyota T-IV? Would Amsoil ATF last 30k with only drain & fills?

what year is your yota?? motor??

this is what i do with mine and was recommended by a friend (yota mechanic)

15-20k mile drain and fills (4-5qts) ATF (amsoil is fine and will last that long but with the 15-20k mile oci for atf you will never have to have it flushed

change the oil 5k mile tops! per Terry, 4-runners and tacomas have ---- air filtration so no matter what engine oil you use try not to go over 5k miles

Differentials every 30k miles or sooner if you are towing. 75-90 weight diff oil is fine.

its not what you use with toyotas its how often you change it is whats going to make a difference

its an 03 Highlander with the 1mzfe, how is the air filtration on these Toyotas?

i caved in and bought some Amsoil ASL 5w30, 5k oci still? i was thinking abou trying 5k first run because of some of the old oil remnants then trying 6-8k and getting a uoa
