Typo: GL-4 is active, GL-3 is inactive

Below is a good article that explains the difference between GL-5 and MT-1 in terms of test performance. SAE J2360 oils have a field trial and review by the lubricant review institute.

Only the major brands are likely to carry the J2360 approval - unlike API engine oil licenses, you cannot gain approval by just blending an approved formula, you have to go through the trial/review process on the finished fluid. Expensive process.

I run Valvoline Synthetic in my diffs. It meets the U.S MIL. Spec and that is plenty good enough for me and I pay $8.99 a qrt to boot.

I can't get Redline locally and no luck with Mobil 1 yet. What about Royal Purple's gear lube? It's 75W90 and its rated GL4/GL5.

I have used RP and its a great gear oil but its more then twice the price and I don't think you get more then twice the value.

I find that only some OEMs make a GL-3 gear oil, and for certain special apps. I have never once read about someone using a GL-4 oil as a replacement and having a problem.
