does anyone run diesel oil in the gas engines ? my brother just had an engine rebuilt and the guy said to run diesel oil in it. why ? there are plenty of good motor oils out there.

My dad uses DELO 400 SAE 30 in his older 50's Dodge truck and DELO 10w30 XLE in his 02' and 01' Dakota pickups without issue

Say you are comparing a 15w40 HDEO or Mixed fleet diesel oil, with a 10W-40 conventional passenger car oil.
The 15w40 "diesel" oil wins in a lot of things:
It will have stouter base stocks.
HTHS Viscosity is pretty much guaranteed to be higher ( viscosity at 300F )
They pretty much always have hig levels of ZDDP which is an additive used to prevent camshaft wear on old flat tappet engines.
It will probably have a Higher Total Base Number, which is the oil's ability to fight off acids.
It will probably have more detergents and dispersants which will keep the engine clean.
They require less Viscosity index improvers, which means the oil will maintain its viscosity for longer, and also VIIs create deposits when destroyed and form deposits inside the engine.
It will probably even be cheaper than a 10W-40 Passenger car oil!
Keep in mind oil companies have in mind that a 15w40 HDEO will be used in equipment that is worth sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars, they cannot afford to have an engine failure caused by one of their oils, so they put a lot of effort into designing these oils.

Yes I have.
I have used it in a Harley Davidson twin cam for many thousands of miles.
I use it in lawn tractor engines without issues.
I have run it in a couple of gas cars with no ill effects.

I run it in everything. My wifes 08 ford edge has 195,000 miles and the oil is just as clean at 5,000 miles as it is when new. Only looses 1/2 pint in 5,000 miles also. I use it in my 13 Harley also. Even the manual says if their oil in not available to use 15w40 HDEO oil. Follow the money on syn and thin oils. It was not done for the consumer.

For zddp, hths, detergency, long drain oil. Think I'll switch all 3 cars to non - sn hdeo in a 10w30 soon.

I've got dual rated HDEOs in two cars ATM and have used these oils in other gassers in the past.
I've never UOAed a run of HDEO but these oils seem to hold up well and to minimize consumption.
These are thick oils regardless of SAE grade since they typically have HTHS viscosity >3.5. This may have a noticeable impact on fuel economy relative to a PCMO or may not.
My experience has been mixed in that regard.
These are stout oils that meet serious and well defined standards, unlike typical PCMOs as sold here.
I'd use one in almost anything and they're often available quite cheaply.
You want a 5W-40 dual rated HDEO? Twelve bucks a gallon MIR on D1 through the end of May. With store deals and the MIR, I can get this oil for as little as $1.60/qt. So can many others.
Price and value seem to favor dual rated HDEOs, although I'm not sure that such oils would be appropriate to our 0W-20 Honda. OTOH, some might be, like the 0W-40 Rotella SB.

Why you stop? I'm putting DELO XLE 10w30 soon with a MC FL-910S

I have to kill some of my oil in my stash.

And I'm waiting on it to go on sale like last time.

People who want to run a good diesel oil in their gas engine should look at the approved oils for Ford Powerstroke. It does NOT include some of the new CK-4 rated oils like Rotella T6.

Yeah, yeah likely story. I'll bet $1 I'll be flamed for running DELO XLE 10w30 and or DELO 400 SAE 30 in my Camry too

Do you see the logic flaw there?

How many new cars come with a diesel-engine oil (HDEO) from the factory so that they will break in more successfully? Answer: 0. Most come with a full-synthetic PCMO as the break-in and future oil-change oil.
