so what should I be using in a 1988 Bobcat with a diesel engine. The operators manual just says a 50/50 mix. Maybe in 1988 there was only "old green"?

I use G-05 in my SUVs so thats in my stockpile/stash.

I believe Zerex G-05 specifically states that it is formulated to resist cavitation that can be produced in the water jackets of a diesel engine.

Zerex G-05 is mentioned for diesel vehicles (mainly for normal car companies). However its Zerex Extended Life Coolant that meets the Cat, Cummins, etc diesel spec. That however has 2-EHA in the MSDS.

Donald,

What type of engine does your Bobcat have: wet sleeve vs. dry sleeve.

At my workplace we used to have a diesel Kubota tractor that just recommended conventional green coolant (if I remember correct). When I asked about this, the dealer said it's because it had a dry cylinders.

I still used John Deere Coolgard in it.

Wet sleeved diesel engines are prone to cavitation and require the specialized coolants with SCA's that form a protective coating on the OUTSIDE cylinder wall to resist cavitation (High pressure bubble pitting and erosion). My bad, if you already know this stuff.

Have fun with that machine. Be safe....my friend was almost killed when exiting a running machine. It had no safety cutoffs. His bib overall strap caught a joystick when he was half emerged, started spinning him, almost crushing him.

They can be expensive to maintain. Lots of wear points in the hydraulics, tracks, etc.. You are good to learn all the details about it.

My opinion, if wet sleeved, go with a true diesel engine coolant for the extra protection to a hard working machine. The current G05 thread touches on problems Ford had with G05 in CERTAIN engines because it wasn't up to the task (excellent coolant, otherwise).

Take care.

OK I will ask that question. There is a Skidsteer forum for just those kind of questions.

As for safety, the machine has a seat belt and a bar like a roller-coaster to hold one in. It does have a parking brake. I was looking in the manual on how to adjust or fix it. Turns out there was just a problem with about 3" of wood chips/sawdust in the floor area.
