Pink Engine Coolant and Green Inverter Coolant - Owners Manual Specifies same Phosphate based ethylene glycol

2021 Hyundai Ionic Hybrid has 2 coolant systems (Engine and Hybrid Inverter). The Hyundai Manual specifies "Phosphate based ethylene glycol for aluminum engine components for both coolant systems.

The Engine coolant is pink and I suspect is a phosphate OAT. The Hybrid Inverter is Green and the manual calls for the same specification "phosphate based ethylene glycol". I question and would like to know why Hyundai used different color engine coolant since they specify the same coolant.

Question

Any issue adding the pink phosphate OAT coolant that I already have to the green inverter coolant reservoir?

Appreciate your thoughts

That sure seems very odd Hyundai did that. My toyota hybird takes the same pink coolant in both systems.

Thanks for the link to your previous posting. I I did a search for Hyundai but should have added Kia and Genesis as they are the same vehicle manufacturing group.

Looks like from your check into the two different Kia Coolant offerings (green and pink) they have the same makeup except for color dye. That plus the Hyundai specification in the 2021 Ionic Hybrid Owners Manual being the same fo rthe green Hybrid Inverter and Pink Engine Coolant I am going to top off the inverter reservoir with pink color. One less jug of coolant on my shelf.

Thanks for the link to your earlier Kia post.

I agree unless they want customers to stock two different products to service their cars as an added profit motive. if so that is sad. Other possibility could be it was end of run and they were trying to us up the remaining coolant but it seems unlikely since over considerable time span they used two different color coolants. I will have to stop in to Hyundai/Kia dealer and check under the hoods of some 2025 MY hybrid vehicles.

Our 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EV has 3 separate cooling systems (i think they are: electric motor, batteryinvertor/charger, and HVAC system) but at least they all use the same (dexcool) product. I was glad to see that the 2025 Chevy Equinox EV only has one common coolant system and reservoir.

I worked in auto Manufacturing and Design for many years and we would always try to use the same fluids (material, service parts, ect) across the vehicle/engine lines unless there was a need to use something different. Being a Wrench Turner and DIYer that has been servicing many vehicles for family and friends since my early days; I always thought about the Service Tech and DIYer/Owner when designing a engine/vehicle. When able, I always tried to use multi use serviceable fasteners with internal and external drive features incase on was rounded off during service/repair life.

I am glad to see your Toyota Hybrid uses the same pink coolant for both systems. Toyota does a nice job on their Hybrid systems and seems to offer the hybrid option on many of their vehicles offering allowing the custome to chose. RAV4 is a good example as it is available in ICE only, Hybrid, Plug in Hybrid.

Best regards

There's this as well . Topped off the '18 HYUNDAI Accent with the HONDA Genuine BLUE coolant . No issues .
