Did you turn on heater yet ?

We've had some chilly nights what with a pre-halloween snowstorm and all.

Ive kept the thermostat set between 50 and 62F, which has been plenty comfortable. There tends to be enough heat during the day that the house will stay over 60, which is all we ever generally keep it at anyway.

Same. It's set relatively low though. My room in particular rarely get's cold, a function of two computers running 24/7. Heck, I still have my window A/C unit in just to run as a fan. I see no reason to take it out as when shut up it get's quite ridiculously hot. The rest of the house is generally pretty comfortable year-round.

Just curious, what do you guys wear when at home and it's 60F? We keep our thermostat at 70F and wear sweaters/sweatshirts. Anything lower than that and I'd have to wear a jacket and a second set of pants... my wife sleeps under 3 blankets at that temp, too.

We generally keep our thermostat in the winter set about 72 and that's usually comfortable enough for us when it's daytime. Nighttime is another story. I like it cold when I sleep, with a fan running. My mom likes her heated mattress pad. The thermostat at night goes down to 64 I think.

During the summer the central A/C sits at like 69 usually, but that doesn't affect my room or most of the upstairs even. That's why I finally resorted to picking up a window unit off craigstlist, I was tired of my computer/bedroom being 85 degrees day or night.

Furnace has been on for a couple of weeks now. Just got a new furnace installed last week actually. Finally the relic from 1976 is gone!

Ever have to repair it? The furnace in our house is only 13/14 years old or so (house is very new) and last winter we had to replace both the flame sensor and the igniter, and something else too. It would ignite briefly, then go out and wouldn't relight. We'd wake up and the house would be in the 40s.

This puppy was OLD bud, she had a pilot light and just a giant burner basically. Had the thermocoupler replaced two years ago when it went out and wouldn't start again. Nice that it was -20 when it happened.

My thermostat is set between 55 and 64F, and we are very comfortable with a light sweater in the evening and sleep real well with cooler temperature under medium filled down comforter.

Pete, You're in Chicago and you can not stand the cold ?

My house was built in 1970-1971, the furnace is original and still runs well but a little noisy. I need to look into how to oil/grease the moving parts to keep it running few more years.

I don't live there, but I love Ely, Nevada. On November 5, 2011, which was two nights ago, it had the national low of 0 degrees F.

I was there once in 2007. It was about 12 noon and fifteen degrees F. No wind.

I had black pants on and a dark shirt with no jacket. The sun was brilliant and I was comfortable. I even had on sunscreen and dark glasses, it was so bright. But as soon as the sun went behind a small cloud that cold rushed in.

At night in that high desert, it can get really windy, and you have no idea how throat-hurting air can be so cold. That's when you go into the Hotel Nevada or the Jailhouse Casino and have a good time.

The lows haven't been below 45 yet here. Expecting 75 for the high. Fairly typical about this time of year for us.

The heater usually doesn't get turned on until December. My parents had their first fire, though, but I haven't felt compelled to do so but their house gets colder. I usually heat with the fireplace most of Dec. until it gets cold (Jan/Feb).

My house is on a slab and it seems to retain ground temperature pretty well. It's great for winter time, but not so much for summer.

Ours has run a few times since mid-October. We've had some sunny days, and the house was designed to take advantage of solar heating. So we warm the house during the sunny days and then after sundown set everything to keep the heat in for the evening. Even on 40 degree nights we wake up to a 65 degree house in the morning. If we don't have a sunny day we lose the ability to gather the solar heat, and the house drops to the mid-50's at night, and that's when the furnace runs the next morning.

We keep a bedroom window open to keep the room as cool as possible, and often use a window fan combined with double hung windows to remove heat from the room.

You are right.

It never gets cold anywhere in California.

There are no ski areas here, except for towns where guys named Witkowski or Krazeuwski live.

I go to Disneyland every day.

Yes, we do because low overnight can be below 40-45F few nights a year.

The one thing many of us don't have is air conditioning. But we have table fans for hot summer days.

You've obviously never been or lived in any part of Ca in the winter time. Even the deserts can drop down close to freezing occasionally.
And - as someone else mentioned, we all know that the snow in the mountains happens even though it's 80's degrees! LOL!

Some of the ski areas have already opened out here. From the slopes of Mt. Baldy, you can see the Pacific Ocean on a clear day AND see ships in the water with the naked eye. Mt. Baldy is right on the Los Angeles/San Bernardino County line.

Here is a YouTube video showing locals at a the Mt. Baldy ski area last year (This place is about a 50 minute drive from my apartment).

I checked the video and it is clean with no comments as of now.

At the top of the ski lift is the Baldy Notch Restaurant which has inferior food, but in Mt. Baldy Village there is a place called the Buckhorn which has a great steak sandwich. The Buckhorn has two big fireplaces and an overhead gas heater, nice waitresses, and great prices. I have driven over there for lunch many times.
