Did I make the right choice?

I drove myself crazy selecting a oil filter for a New Holland utility tractor (workmaster 37) the oem part # is MT40283380 ($38 locally). I'm doing the oil change for a friend who is a white collar guy with the tractor he play arounds with on his hunting property. I did the break-in oil change back in 2020 at 35 hours with Rotella T6. Now the tractor has 90 hours total and its at my place so its convenient for me to change once again. Last time I used a Wix 57000 after quite some time finding a cross reference. The wix 57000 which I paid about $16 for in '20 is now $39 at a local auto parts store, crazy imo, for such a small filter. After crossing the 57000 to Fram I found the popular 3614 is suppose to match up at a whopping $4 at Walmart. I really didnt want to use a $4 filter on a new tractor thats not mine and with limited options I opted for a TG3614 for $8. For some reason on Wix website it only lists the 57000 as a match for the oem filter. Wix does not mention the popular wix 51348 as a match. I have two Toyota vehicles and a lawn tractor that use a 3614 also and I've always used the wix 51348 in them without issue. Anyway, Fram lists the 3614 as a cross to the 57000 and 51348 so I feel the filter should work. Am I missing something? Thanks for following along.

Nope, it sounds like New Holland had a slightly more rare filter type vs others with the same diameter and thread.

You could probably go 200 hours at least on both oil and filter if you wish.

Use a fe3600 if it will fit. Or a fe3614.
They're both a $13 filter for me at my local Walmart and it's adarn good filter. Seemingly one of the best ones that you can get right now. Definitely the best you can get for $13.
FE just means fram synthetic endurance.

When I used to do work for others, I always CYA'ed myself by asking (not telling) my friends what the options were.

Cross referencing filters causes problems in rare instances. Wix has one the biggest cross reference catalogs, but on an occasion or two, I have had a bad fit or otherwise bad cross reference (Kubota hydraulic). I was at a CAT repair facility once and they were spending big $$$$ to repair a diesel fuel pump system because someone used an aftermarket fuel filter of the wrong micron rating.

Your oil filter choice seems o.k.. Maybe compare the bypass valve settings?

It appears the wix 57000 is a 3/4-16 thread, 3 inch diameter, approximately 3 inches long super common filter.
A fram 3600 is the longer version.

A fram synthetic endurance is going to be smaller micron than any paper oil filter.
The bypasses are set for 12 to 17 on every FE filter that has a bypass that has specs published.
If you run a larger 3600 series filter, if it fits, the bypass will probably never open.

I would CYA and put on the OEM filter or documented cross reference, explain it is a rare filter that costs extra and not give it a second thought. No point in you taking on the risk to save two $20 bills for a guy who has spent tens of thousands on hunting land and a tractor toy. Not being jealous or cynical, just realistic about who takes the risk and who gets the benefit. The fact that the oil gets changed at all will make the tractor last 40 years.

Look at the cross reference on this K&N page that crosses to the MT40283380. Many Fram and Wix substitutions shown. I wonder if they are all legitimate crosses?

Yeah it's one of the most common filters on earth.
A fram 8a is 3/4-16 thread with the same o-ring footprint as a fram 3600, 3614 wix 57000, but the fram 8a is fatter and longer than a 3600.
If a fram fe8a will fit on a 25hp tractor it would be an eternal filter.

I was looking at this filter today and did a quick lookup on this site and was steered towards the TG by other posts. However, I can simply go back and get the synthetic E and keep the TG for my lawnmower. I already changed the oil and simply ran it for about a minute to check the level.

I'm surprised the 57000 isnt listed since its the only one listed on the Wix site for the tractor.

The TG isn't bad either.
Main things the TG does is grab 99% of 20 micron dirt which is a very good filter. It's a synthetic and cellulose blend it has a mix of great dirt holding capacity, flow and that 99% efficiency.
The synthetic endurance does "99%+" which tests out about 99.9% it's also grabbing most of the 15 micron dirt and some of the 10 micron dirt too. The synthetic fibers hold lots of dirt and still flow very well that's why it's a "20,000 mile filter".

I use the Fram 3614 series on my mowers and I agree; they work fantastic and are a lot less expensive than the branded filters like Kohler, Briggs, etc. Probably better too.

You talked me into keeping it on. This tractor will never see many hours, in the last 4 years roughly 50 hrs only. I could always change out the filter in a year or so with the oil still being good. I’d think any filter would work at a 10 to 20 hour interval change. I appreciate the comments, thanks guys.

You made a solid choice going with the Fram TG3614. It will serve that tractor well till it lands in your hands again. I run a TG3614 on my JD Zero Turn with no issues. Compared to what some filters cost -- good choice!!
