Did I get a bad Carquest Premium 85372?

I have 2 F150s with the 5.4 engine, one is a 07 with 68k on it, and one is a 08 with 215k. Have always used motorcraft fl820s filters but switched it up on the last oil change to the carquest premium 85372 filter. After the oil change the 08 had terrible chain rattle on every startup. After about 500 miles I finally pulled the carquest filter and replaced with a motorcraft filter. The chain rattle went away. The 07 starts fine every time with no issues. Is it possible I just got a dud filter? I plan on cutting it open and will post pics.

I just installed a 84356 on my crv and now I’m getting a start up rattle every once in a while…may have to return the rest and stick with Fram

A leaky ADBV can still allow the galleries above the filter to drain down. It's a long standing misconception that filters mounted like yours (and like on many GM engines) "doesn't need an ADBV". But they do, in order to keep all the oil above the filter from draining down due to gravity.

Huh interesting. Guess I’ll be returning the other 5 filters and go back to Fram endurance or tough guard

Don't discount the fact with recent ambient temp change, you are now starting at or near freezing, (unless your vehicle is parked in a heated garage) I made a similar change also, my car takes a FL-910s. I noticed some subtle warmup and run differences - but I also changed oil brand and viscosity.

My concern coming from manufacturing and also being involved in IQC (though in a high technology environment) is even though this forum has assessed the assembly quality to be good to excellent (albeit a small sample size), I now ask from where is the critical filter media sourced and which tests are being performed on each incoming batch to assure it meets the documented performance requirements for particulate capture and flow. I have been bitten by this very aspect in the past.

It may not meet the needs of the big engines to bypass enough, according to the oil used, or the media restricts too much on cold start up at 1500+ rpm. I know I have taken off filters that probably the media hardened up with age that gave a death rattle even after car sat only an hour. Took off and threw away.
The adbv too, but it has to drain back through the oil pump. The one motor is quite a bit more used than the other. The chain tensioners if drained out may have a longer stroke to tighten chain than on a new chain.
But the Motorcraft didn’t have the problem, that is a fact.

I did find PG’s ISO certification.

I see a pink granite block for measuring, Starrett, with what looks like a vernier height gage. I see a man in a very fresh large lab coat with his thumb on something, and a computer. The lower picture looks like containers being unloaded. Im sure they do a very good job at checking the filters. So it has to be the design that caused the start up noise. Which stopped when a MC filter was installed.

I just tested a bunch of Fram filters and a lot of them had ADBV related leaking. The Ultra Synthetic seemed the worst, followed by the Titanium, and the Synthetic endurance performed pretty well. I also tested a Carquest Premium and it was probably overall the best of the batch. I only had one Carquest unfortunately, but with the failure rate of the Fram's, I'd still lean toward another Carquest even if the issue ended up being a bad one this time around.

Before you cut open the filter, if you have an air compressor maybe try testing the ADBV by applying low pressure to the outlet of the filter (<5 PSI).

I tested three FS3600, three FE3600, four XG3600, and because of the disappointing results, added a Carquest Premium 85516.

I went into this testing expecting Fram to perform very well, fully planning to use them in my vehicles. Based on the results of these tests and Fram's failure to respond to my messages for weeks now, I will not be using Fram products anymore. I will run the 3rd XG3600 for a brief time for an engine flush and then cut it open for more testing, but the others are going to be returned and I'll be using the Carquest until something better comes up.

Thanks. Good to know. These certs will be site specific though. China?
We used to a have a little bit of friendly "Campus Competition" at my last 'three letter alphabet' contractor job between Maryland and the New Hampshire satellite. Just thinking about this makes me nauseous. Ugh ...

If you swap it, post a picture of the date code on the filter end-that will tell us if it is Vietnam or China produced. I have some of both, but the Vietnamese ones seem a little better built.

It was Chinese but I don’t think it was the filter. I may be in need of a new timing chain
