From the local Pep Boys...

Royal Purple was $9.99 on the shelf immediately adjacent. Am I that out of touch with OTS oil prices? Or is it common knowledge that buying oil NOT part of a change special is stupid?

Oh and of course you can tack 9.75% sales tax on since this is downtown Chicago...

Well with something like Royal Purple at $9.99/qt right next to it, or Red Line for $10.95 online...

Dang. Cool to see you can get that locally though!

We are starting to turn into Europe. Lets see if those every 3000 miles people stick to 3K OCIs at those prices.

The prices are the same( i.e. OUT OF CONTROL )no matter where you buy oil these days per individual qt. I posted about this MONTHS ago when I went to buy some oil and ran into this at PB, AZ, AAP, etc... Even WalMart.

On a side note PepBOys has a deal right now for 5 qts of RP w/ RP filter for $35. Runs through Feb 29. Limit 2 p/ customer.

This is why I like the 5-quart jugs. I never buy oil as part of an oil change special, but Mobil 1 is $27 at Walmart for the 5-quart jug. That's just a hair over $5/quart, which is very reasonable for quality synthetic oil.

Sorry to be blunt, but I'm glad to see this - about time you folks in the US started to experience the prices we have had up here for YEARS!

Yeah and I got blasted for saying this by a royal purple fan. Since around here I can not buy a 5qt jug of royal purple so an OC of RP would cost me close 80 dollars when I could go with M-1 and normal everyday price an OC would be 35 dollars. I do not see the value.

No one up here pays $9/L for synthetic either do they? My personal limit is about $5/L which almost every oil gets that cheap on sale once a year. Its not like it goes bad!

My point was more that the disparity in prices between something like Castrol Edge and Royal Purple. Pretty much every synthetic in the store was $9-$10/qt.

This is just the tip of the ice burg. Just wait.

Synthetic lubes lag behind in pricing due to overall volume of the market. Retail prices of conventional oil have been on the way up over the last 12 months; synthetics are on the way up as well.

Over the long term, syn's cost around 3x more money. However, recently, it's only been 2x or even a bit less. But the prices are going to escalate, and probably get neat that 3x factor.

Buy up what you want while you can.

Personally cannot justifying buying any oil at $10/ qt, no matter what group of oil. Unless magically, there's scientific proof the oil can go 20K without issue, yeah for the sake of convenience i will.

I've seen the same thing at almost every chain AP store around me, which is the south burbs of Chicago. I can sometimes find M1 0w40 for arounf $7/quart here, but it's not always available at meijer. While I have stocked up on sales, those deals are spotty and not always a GREAT Deal anyway, as my filter is not usually included.

So...and I am not hawking it, but MAYBE some of these "big dollar" oils like Amsoil, Redline, etc are not such a bad deal. When you find somewhere with low priced or free shipping, it makes even more sense.

M1 0w40 is a great oil, so I might pay upwards of $9 for it. However, while I'm using GC I got on sale, I dont think there is a day when I would pay $9 for it.

Makes me rethink what I'll do when my stash is up and it's time to renew my Amsoil membership.

Man, I was just going to say that too!

Sad to say I wish I could tell you WM's future price changes...

Let's just say they go up- A LOT. First major jump is in May...

I was shocked to see that Pennzoil Platinum had gone from $18.75 to $24.97 per 5L jug at my local Wally World. Also regular M1 was $26.48, but the extended performance was still $26.
