Did I drain my FF too early?

Changed my FF oil after nearly 500-1,000 miles on an Infiniti Red Sport (3.0tt v6). Wasn't concerned much then but looked at a used oil analysis of a member with the same engine (see below) changed at a similarly early interval. I put in Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w20 (per manual). My concern is that I removed a very high-moly break-in oil and maybe wasn't supposed to. The manual says "you don't have to change during break in", but I'm worried I should have kept it in for the 10k OCI?

Should I add some Moly or perhaps find a similar oil? Is the trip nuclear Moly in the Mobil 1 Extended Performance just as good as the high Moly in the used oil analysis?

Did you change the filter too?

It's good to get FF oil out IF it has any metallic bits in it... Look at the oil in bright sunlight and in a clean pan. What do you see?

If clear and clean w/o any metallic's, you could filter it and re-inatll at 3,000 with a new filter and cruise on. Or run your Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy out to 7,500 and then do it. Lots of options.

Me, I'd just recycle it and keep going

After 500-1000 miles everything inside the engine that needed to be broken in is broken in. No need to worry.
What does the manual say about the break in? They usually specify how the vehicle should be drive for the first 600-1000 miles. That's usually the break in period.

You dumped perfectly good oil. But it's done and the only thing wasted is money and everybody does a bit of that.

Probably too early, at least according to the OEM, but what's done is done and it won't hurt anything but your wallet. Plus, there is a chance, however remote, that your engine needed it. No harm done, run her and enjoy.

Honda has a FF with a lot of moly in it. I remember on the Accord forum some of the guys esp with the V6 complaining of oil consumption issues. One thing they all seemed to have in common was changing out the FF very early on. While others that left it in for 6000 + miles didn't have any issues. So a common theme over there was leave the FF in and don't change it out too early.

I changed mine at 1k as well. I'd be more concerned with that thin oil in a high specific output turboed engine. My car says 5w30 on the cap but specifies 5w-40 for higher performance 274hp from 2.0l dit.

Thanks folks. Makes sense. My main concern was the Moly, but it seems the Mobil 1 Extended Performance has it and in a superior (I believe) form. So, my initial, 80 ppm (EP VOA) vs 700 ppm (FF UOA) + break-in oil is diminishing.

Honda's VCM system is far more likely to have caused oil consumption issues in the V6 than an early FF change.

What's done is done. I'd say nothing to worry about, but why dump the oil and THEN read then owner's manual?

You did well getting it out early, the oil is not a high moly oil neither is the one Honda uses it is moly paste residue used on the bearings to prevent dry start when it was made. Its easier for them than priming the engine.

Once the engine has oil pressure this compound is doing very little as far as additional wear protection goes, rogue metallic particles are possibly doing more harm than the moly is doing good.
Sleep well, you did not harm.

+1 That's my theory too. I don't recommend changing the FF early. If you're worried about metal, just let the oil filter do it's job. The average person never changes their oil early and cars still go hundreds of thousands of miles.

Don't really buy into the logic here.

Unless you keep the high moly break-in oil in there in future changes, wear will just occur later when you switch to "regular" oil.

Picking a high moly oil as a regular oil sounds like the right prescription.

However, I would do some more analysis on the group of Hondas with wear issues to find some other common denominator.

Your Infiniti came with Idemitsu oil as the FF. That is the oil used for vehicles made in Japan which I believe yours is. Correct me if I am wrong. In either case, you can just buy the Idemitsu oil online and go with that in the future if you want to.

That's not really true, most car engines aren't fully seated in until around 15K, but it's not something one really needs to worry much about IIRC...

As for the OP, I would have left in in for a few thousand miles, but certainly not 10K. I doubt it will make any difference...

This is true but it wasn't long ago when the average person didn't change the FF at 1K or less, it was in the owners manuals and in some Euro countries it still is.
Some of the meal particles are smaller than the oil filter can filter out and can be damaging especially to bearings. The newer aluminum shells are more resistant to this sort of abrasive but not immune.

I could go on about engines being apart and bearing streaking and so on, that would turn into a flaming thread and I don't need to feel like a long tailed tom cat in a room full of rocking chairs. All I will say is oil is cheap and engines are real expensive.
