A friend of mine is on a very tight budget and needs an oil change. Car is a 1995 Dodge Neon 16-Valve 2.0 with 96,000 miles. He turned to me for an oil recommendation and it's getting colder here in PA. He wanted an oil and filter he could run for 5K. I told him to buy a Pennzoil 5w30 conventional jug and a Purolator Premium Classic filter. $10.50 for the oil and $4 for the filter. Decent deal if you ask me. Comments welcome.

He should buy 5-qt jug Pennzoil Platinum at Walmart for $20 and get $15 rebate from Pennzoil, net is $1/qt and he can extend OCI to 7-8k miles. Since he already bought Pennzoil conventional, he should mail in $5 rebate with the same form below:

Tight budget on a '95 Neon? That's a good recommendation, you might even take things further than 5000 miles.
Pennzoil conventional is perfect for these engines. I have the 2.4, its essentially the same block just different heads.
I have read in these forums and others that the Pennzoil Conventional is notorious for sludging ....because Pennzoil use waxes versus other oils use poly's ....is this accurate??? But everyone recommends the Full Synthetic ...which I could understand.

Geez, you'd think people must believe that Pennzoil is made from the stubs of used candles, half used up bottles of NuFinish and floor wax while other companies actually use oil to make their product. Folks, it is time to enter the worled of reality and understand that Pennzoil is a high quality product that stands equal to or better than many others in quality, durability and engine life.
W/O the hassle of a rebate, I think you made a great suggestion.

very fine choice. to save even more money, change the filter every other time. the Purolator filter is good enough that it will last 2 oil changes at that mileage. filters actually become MORE efficient with use, so the used filter will filter the oil BETTER than the new one. sometimes it is possible to find longer filter that will work, and that's what i do with any of my vehicles that spec a short filter - buy the longer one, and use it for 2 or even 3 changes, depending on the interval.
All Pennzoil 5w30 is group 2 oil, there is NO paraffin in it. Paraffin is sold separately now, for the people that do home canning. ALL 5w30 sold in USA or Canada is full group 2. 5w20 is group 2+. Motor oils do NOT cause sludge, it is caused by driving conditions, and sometimes made worse by the design of the engine.
Also NOTE: there is paraffin WAX, and paraffin OIL, 2 totally different things. Use google, or just check Wikipedia, under paraffin oil:

When someone, like myself, questions whether he/she may have inaccurate information that just means the person doesn't have all the details to come up with an factual conclusion and I thank you very much for your information that will help me make this determination ....from what I have been reading in these forums it looks like PP is an awesome synthetic for the cost, now with the rebate, but I haven't seen much information or break-down of comparison of Pennzoil Conventional oil versus other conventional oils.

thanks. that neon has a pretty fancy engine. Although PP is an awesome synthetic, you can get just as awesome from NAPA - you have to wait for them to put on their house brand of synthetic, which is made by Valvoline for them, and on sale would be 3$ a quart. If you don't want to wait, then SuperTech, which is supplied by different manufacturers in different parts of the country, Super Tech synthetic 5w30 is also an awesome oil, that I am sure the engine cannot tell the difference: I have used so called "bargain brands" for all my life, always with excellent engine life. Even though Super Tech is "cheap", the quality is equal to any other group 3, such a PP, QS, Valvoline, Castrol, etc. The price is lower because that is their niche, and they get there by saving money on having no marketing, and by paying the CEO just a modest wage. Used oil analysis of Super Tech 5w30 here is excellent: I saw a Subaru Forester 2.5l with excellent results at 10,000 miles using Super Tech 5w30 synthetic. Conventional Super Tech, at 9.50$ is a bit pricey compared to a year ago, look for the price to come down. It is also an excellent oil. For that matter ANY "bozo the clown brand" 5w30 oil will be group 2 base oil, and will do the trick. But for an extra buck, I would go for PP or QS. PP and QS also sell 5w20 by the jug, which Super Tech does not do, for those needing a thinner oil.
ALL modern 5w30 SM conventional oils are FAR better than what was being sold 15-20 years ago. Use ANY of them with confidence. Pennzoil conventional however, is almost legendary in how good it is. If they start to jack the price though, just switch brands, and as long as the oil is changed regularly, there will be no problem.

I think the Pennzoil Conventional and filter for just under $15 was a great deal and a good choice. I almost did the same thing for my T-Bird, but decided to spend just under $30 and go with Mobil 1 Extended Performance and a Motorcraft filter. Mobil 1 Extended Performance is good for 15,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first. I only drive about 7,000 miles per year (but they're hard miles), so it's a one-year oil for my usage. Two or three oil changes for $15 each or $30 for one oil change seems negligible to me, and since a one-year OCI saves me some time and effort, that was my logical choice. I like changing oil, but not unnecessarily. Since I have three cars, I get enough time doing oil changes to satisfy my oil obsession!
