I certainly CAN hear the difference in noise between oils! If you can't your either deaf or just plain Dumb! Put Mobil 1 in an engine and run it a few thousand miles, dump it for some Pennzoil or another good oil and it will be quieter! Its so noticeable that my oblivious wife even hears the difference!

My engines sound the same with 10K oil or new. Calling people "dumb" or "deaf" here at BITOG because they say M1 doesn't make an engine have more noise vs other brand, is rude and shows a lack of respect for BITOG members.

With my 4.2-engined Mercedes W126, I used Valvoline 20W-50 in the summer in Denver, and continued with it when I came back to Da Swamp. After a year, I went to Chevron Delo 15w40. For some reason, the oil pressure gauge showed a higher pressure when hot than with the 20W-50.
Otherwise, no performance differences, sound, or anything like that in any of my cars, except that QS Defy 10w30 slowed some oil burning in my GM 3.8 Park Avenue that the Castrol Edge 10w30 I tried had exacerbated.

I'm sure you guys are going to love this but heres my story...
Less than a year ago I switched my high mileage honda odyssey from conventional 5w20 to Pennzoil Platinum 5w20. Everything felt good if not a bit better than before for the first 2,000 miles or so then I noticed oil under the car more and more of it over the coming weeks. Next thing I know I need to replace the V Tech Solenoid seal and am leaking out of the RMS and around the oil pump. So did changing oil make a big difference for me YES it caused me money and lots of time
... In all seriousness I get what happened I was using the maintenance minder that was way over estimating the ability of the oil and deposits had formed false seals in many places that the PP cleaned up and exposed bottom line I kinda wish I had just shortened my OCI and kept with a lower detergent oil like Valvoline conventional (what was used before) instead of experiencing the wonderful clean of PPPP... Fast forward some months and Pennzoil High Mileage has almost stopped the leak and I plan on trying some Maxlife I have on hand for the next change. This is probably not the Significant Difference you wanted to hear about but it was indeed a significant differance.

tig1 and racin4ds. I tend to like oil just a bit thicker. But I certainly don't know the thinner oil too. In fact I used the 5w20 specd for my Ford Fusion SEL while I had it for 70k plus miles. I will add that the Motorcraft 5w30 really did quiet down my lady's Camry. Plus my Altima was a bit quieter with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum than the Mobil Super Synthetic. Having stated that I still thought the Mobil Super Synthetic ran rather well in my car too. I would gladly run it again.

Several people have commented that switching from an HDEO 15w40 to a synthetic makes a noticeable difference. I've seen it myself. There's always the placebo effect, but if you consider yourself an objective enough observer (and I do so myself), don't dismiss it.
Thanks, yeah I do believe there was an objective difference. I think it's possible that older, high-mileage engines are more responsive to oil quality as there is more room for improvement than in a new, perfectly running engine.

I did a couple of drain and fills of my Tacoma's PS reservoir at the 60,000 mile mark, drawing the old fluid out with a 30cc syringe. After a couple of drain and fills, once the Royal Purple PS fluid got mixed around in the system, the plunger of the syringe began moving much more smoothly. Whereas before it was a two hand job to use the syringe, I was able to move it with my thumb afterwards. I know a plastic plunger isn't analogous to the PS system, but I found it interesting.

^^Before Royal Purple I used Castrol Edge 5w40. I'm not surprised you had good experience with their power steering fluid. In my opinion everything in their line up is top notch. I love their Max ATF.
