For years I'd heard that people sprinkled the stuff outdoors here, because roaches didn't like to cross it. Now I'm reading that it's safe to use indoors -- the food grade DE, that is, not the stuff for pool filters. As you can imagine, with two cats in the depths of The Swamp, I'm always battling fleas. Have any of you used it? Did it work?

DE is somewhat effective in controlling any insect it can get on as it will cut them. They then lose body fluids and die.

I strongly recommend Boric acid powder for fleas. Dirt cheap and nearly non toxic. Controls the larvae which is most effective.

Will the boric acid bother the cats if they walk on it and lick it off?

Note that Boric Acid's most common usage is in eye wash!

Very benign, the cats could eat a tablespoon and it wouldn't hurt them. One of the safest choices, and it's super cheap and in your local Lowes or Home Depot.

It is also effective against many kinds of insects as well.

I've sprinkled the Harris Roach Tablets around for many years, and it doesn't seem to wipe out the roach population. But I've known it to keep the hordes down when nothing else would. I could powder a few tablets and sprinkle them around before I invest more money, and look for DE locally.

The important thing to understand in insect control is presentation.

Proper BA is a powder, almost smoke-like. If applied correctly it is everywhere, and it is much more effective than a sprinkle here and there.
