I am in the market for a 6" dial caliper and can't decide between Mitutoyo, Starret or Brown&Sharpe. I have a cheap digital set right now, which works fine, but I'd rather have something that does not require a battery. My dad is a FAA licensed inspector in the jet engine industry and says his shop uses Mitutoyo calipers but his Coordinate-Measuring Machine is a Brown&Sharpe?

You won't go wrong with any of the three but I think Brown and Sharpe are the nicest and have a covered rack to keep junk out.
My dad does a bit of machining on the side... (Mechanic of 35 years) and he likes the Brown & Sharpe...

a measuring device is only as good as the person doing the measuring.
if you can get your hands on all 3 to test, i'd look for smoothness of the moveable parts, ease of zeroing, and overall durability. tie that into the theoretical accuracy from the manufacturer (typically the smallest measurable unit).

I handle gage calibration for my company - We have several different brands in service. My favorites are Starrett for dial calipers and Mitutoyo for digital (ip66) calipers. The Mitutoyo dial calipers are cheaper and very close in performance to the Starretts. When I started as an Inspector back in 1986 Brown&Sharp were the best hands down. Their quality isn't as good today and they are way over priced.
I have all three. my older brown and sharpe is my fav but you cant go wrong with any of the above
