So, I have a question. My local Chevy Dealer says they use Dexos Synthetic equivilent for their oil changes. What does that even mean? Its either synthetic, synthetic blend or conventional, correct? Can anyone shed light on what this is?

That's a good question! It's either DEXOS oil, or it's not. Will they tell you what brand and type it is?
I believe it would be the AC Delco brand? Its at a GM dealer. When I questioned the "synthetic equivalent" she just kept repeating that it was a synthetic equivalent... very frustrating

You should ask the dealer and report back. They are the only ones who can answer this question. Ask them for the exact brand they use and see if it is on the dexos licensing site.
I asked 3 times. Thats the answer they keep giving me. I'll call back and ask to speak to the service manager I guess...just never heard of an "equivalent" before.

It's probably an oil without the official Dexos approval because that costs money. Nobody at the dealership aside from the individual who chose the oil is going to be able to provide you more information than what they themselves were told so temper your expectations from the staff.

@Foxtrot08, who's in this business can shed some light but IIRC the same oil can be sold with or without the Dexos approval. It's just a matter of how much the dealership wants to pay for the "official" stuff.

I just never heard of a "synthetic equivalent". Makes no sense to me. It either is or isn't. I emailed the service manager, so we will see what he has to say. Shouldn't be that hard...

GM AC Delco DOES NOT MAKE OIL. Mobil makes 99% of GM oil. "Any" synthetic oil labeled DEXOS has the GM certification. But I guarantee you if you put in "any" synthetic oil your engine will not blow up because it doesn't say DEXOS.

I think its just a poor choice of words. Is there a D1G3 oil in any grade that isnt a "full synthetic" ? My WAG would be that maybe theres a blend somewhere that meets the spec so they avoid the full on "synthetic" label.

Thats what I'm thinking. Probably a blend. I don't understand why they just can't be honest and say what it really is. This is what gives dealerships a bad name.

Assuming the dealer is referring to their bulk oil, they'd probably be hard pressed to get exact details about that oil from the distributor they bought it from.

I'd find a different dealership then, if this is important enough to you as it seems.
Unfortunately, no other dealers close to me. And I already paid for 3 oil changes and rotates. Guess I'll have to ask for refund. I usually do it myself anyways. And yes, its important to me to know what goes in my engine. I keep cars for a very long time. I have a 05 and a 08 in the garage now that I bought new. The 08 has 237,000 miles. I've done every oil change myself. Only burns a 1/2 qt. every 5k miles at the oil change. Just a picky person I guess, at least that's what my wife says! And she's always right.

Your dealer probably uses the least expensive dexos certified motor oil that they can get locally in large quantities and the don’t want their customers to be concerned about quality. Maybe from NAPA, CarQuest/FRAM, SuperTech or all of them.
My LEXUS dealer used QuakerState. I’ve never known a dealership to only use their MFG oil.

It has no real meaning. They stated a poor choice of words to you.

Whenever I want a definition of a word like for example "Dexos", I use Google Search engine.

Dexos oil at Walmart is not significantly more than anything else. It just isn't.

I searched it. I understand Dexos. But they (the dealer) keep telling me its a "SYNTHETIC EQUIVELANT" It's synthetic, a blend or conventional.
