I came across this comparison spider graph on the Lubrizol website. Unless my eyes are deceiving me, it looks like D1G3 has a lower standard for wear and sludge protection compared to D1G2. Are motor oils getting to the point that piston cleanliness, LSPI, and turbo charger cleanliness, are beginning to sacrifice wear and sludge protection?

The latest generation will probably require a further reduction in calcium and phosphates (including zddp) to achieve the reductions in low speed pre-ignition and catalyst poisoning, hence the lower wear and sludge protection.

It's hard for me to understand these charts without any meaningful numbers.
You got an A and scored 99 vs. 96.
yes 99 is better but I would even take 91 ...

relatively speaking is the most inner circle like F, then D, C, B and A?
when it comes to oil, how do you compare a better d1g3 (one that exceeds the minimum). Are there specific charts for those?

These look like charts you give to high level management to leave you alone ... lol

It is interesting. I wonder if Lubrizol messed up the graph. I’m sure D1G3 will be a fine oil.
I'm sure it's correct DP are trade offs. Plus these are MIN standards; remember when you read the back of
most of those "premium" oil bottles they say they have " 43% better wear protection than required" ?

Managing deposits on ring lands, preventing hot and cold stuck rings and managing deposits with turbo bushings and cam phasers and their actuator plungers and valves AND TCT plungers are likely the MOST important requirement on new engines.

The Manufacturers have this engine failure data, hold it close, then work with industry to improve the lubricant.

Remember, friends! Dexos is a GM specific....erm, yeah, well.... specification.

More than likely the oil spec will be in relatively sharp focus with GM vehicles, predominantly.

It may be very well LASER sharp on a recently recalibrated vehicle or soon-to-be-released Generic Motormunchers creations.

Yeah? ;>
