I'm about to change out my ATF in my 07' chevy HHR and was wondering what would be the best brand of Dex VI to put back in it. Valvoline, Mobil, Castrol, or Pennzoil?

Dexron-VI has a tight spec, so any brand will be about the same. You can exceed the spec with a Full Synthetic Dex-VI...don't know if that would be worth the extra cost for you.

Just like Dave said. Just about any will do. If you want the real warm fuzzy look at the Amsoil or Redline offerings.

I think I'll go with the pennzoil or Castrol then (both are the most readily available around here at napa or AAP).

One more question: my owner's manual says to go 50,000 miles in between changes, is this a reasonable amount of time to run this ATF? Or should the change intervals be shorter?

It is a good idea to change the filter on GM transmissions @ 30,000 miles, or sooner if you tow. The filter and pan get pretty dirty from break-in debris. After the first filter change, you can go a lot longer on the filter (100K), but you should check/change fluid every 30k to 50k miles.

Valvoline MaxLife is suppose to be Dex VI compliant. Here is their PDS.

Wow thanks for all of that info!

Will it be ok to use maxlife even though I don't have 75K on my transmission yet? I'm only at 40K.

Yes, absolutely.

+1

I used Supertech in my 07 Saturn Ion which is the same transmission as your car and it is just fine. It was actually spotless inside at 60K (first change). Nothing really to even clean up in the pan. Seems like the Dex VI is doing well in these units. The Supertech in my case was pretty much half the price of the other brands but it was hard to find. Had to run around from Walmart to Walmart buying it a quart or two at a time. I must not be the only one using it :-)

I went with the Valvoline because it claims to be full synthetic. (not to mention I got a deal on Amazon.)
