I thought Delo 400 was a mineral oil? Is ISO Syn some HC oil? If so, is Delo 400 suitable for an ARX rinse phase?

AJ, I was at Kragen staring at the blue Delo container for a while, yet my eyes kept wandering a few rows over to the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV. I suffered an emotional crisis and had to leave.

I want to start the rinse phase ASAP. I can't wait to cut the current and next filter open. The ARX-laced oil looks still like new.

Yeah I noticed that ISO syn thing on the bottle too. It's probably the name of the base oil like pennzoil with purebase/Z-7. Wonder what ISO stands for? Everytime I go to Kragen, I have to look at the oil section. I don't want to stay there too long makes me think what oil should I buy for next oil change. 15w40 sounds like a good choice for ARX rinse as long as that grade is okay for your engine. Maybe 10W-40 is a good choice too. The thing I question is that since 15w40 heavy duty oil has more detergents will that affect the ARX?

So as the Chev Supreme line of oils(have 6qts of 10w40 on top of 2 cases of Delo 400 new formula for the beater 190E).

Which begs to ask the question..Can Grp II+ ISO-Syn oils then be categorized as "pseudo/semi-synthetic"?

I mean since Grp III HC oils here at this side of The Pond are considered "synthetic oils".

Well, "iso" comes from ancient Greek and means "equal." I suppose Chevron means to say that their ISO Syn offers performance equal to that of synthetic oil. All I want to know if it's fine for the ARX rinse! The viscosity is within the specified range.

Chevron uses the IsoSyn trademark for conventional oils made with their highly refined Group II+ basestocks. They use this to distinguish from their few remaining primarily Group I oils. The only non IsoSyn labeled current production Chevron motor oils I have seen have been their straight weight oils.

As another poster said, this is similar to Pennzoil's use of the term "PureBase".

Delo will be fine for the rinse cycle, but I've heard some say that you really want a lighter wieght oil for rinsing, I suppose the theory is that it will more easily flow into all the nooks and crannies. When I did my double clean and rinse cycles last year, I stuck with Chevron 10W30, though for one of the rinse cycles I had mistakenly scooped up a couple of quarts of Delo 15W40 when I thought I was grabbing all 6 quarts of Chevron Supreme. I mixed it all up and everything turned out fine.

Im using Delo 400 for the AutoRx cleaning cylce and will use it for the rinse cycle. This is the oil I normally run in the BMW and see no reason to use anything different.

I have an advantage here because the filter is an insert type so it does not require cutting a metal can open.

Steve S is right on the origin of the ISO part of the trademark term. SYN is marketing hype because it "rivals synthetics" .

Delo is a good choice as the additive package is designed to deal with higher contaminant load than regular passenger car oils. It is a conventional, but better refined in terms of removing useless crud out of the crude oil when compared to others. Shell Rotella or Mobil Delvac are alternatives, all available at Walmart.

It is G II+ and the ISO SYN is what they call their cracked base stock! ALmost all oil have some GII,II+ or III in them. I think but am not sure that group II+ would still show most of the charteristics of dino so it should be ok. I know none of us consider anything other then GIV and V a synthetic.

A lot of guys have resorted to useing Walmarts brand of cheap oil to ensure it is all dino.

I thought the ISO dewaxing that is a Chevron patented process which is licenced to several refiners, in GPII, GPII+, and GPIII production.

IIRC it was developed by Gulf Canada.

Chevron calls the process hydroisomerization or something close I am not sure of the exact process ,Pennzoil call it pure base.
