I have access to Chevron Supreme Synthetic 5W-30 and Chevron Delo 400 5W-40 Synthetic (no 0W-30 available here). I'm aware the Supreme synth is Grp 4 and the Delo synth is Grp-3.

Which of the 2 would be best suited for a hot-running turbocharged engine (Volvo 850 Turbo)?

The Supreme is about 50% more expensive than the Delo but is it a better oil?

BTW, I just completed an ARX cleanse-rinse phase.

Thanks!

Actually all Chevron & Havoline 'synthetics' are Group III oils.

For any turbo engine: Mobil 1, Amsoil, Redline or GC would be a better choice.

Not the first stock of SL/GF-3 and earlier batches. I have no clue of differentiating between the 2. I'd use the 5w-40 for a turbocharged engine.

Drew, your statement is different than the information I got from Chevron a few years ago about their Supreme synthetic product, which was identified as Grp. III. Where/when did you get information that it has ever been Grp. IV?

I read a few posts here that a long long time ago, in a far distant land, Chevron/Havoline synthetics were at least partially PAO. Perhaps that was just bogus info. I'd say that anything you find today is group 3 unless it's extremely old stock.

Chevron has been selling some version of Supreme Synthetic long before Castrol NA pioneered the concept of a primarily Group-III oil being marketed as synthetic.

I emailed Chevron's LubeTech and they emailed me back.........All Texaco/Chevron synthetics are Group III.

I bought 42 quarts of Havoline Syn at the AutoZone clearance a few months back for $1 each, but I would not pay $4.49 for this oil. For that much $$ you might as well buy GC or Mobil 1

Hi, thanks to all the replies. First, my error in assuming that the Supreme Synth is Grp-4 - my recollection is not clear.

If the Supreme and Delo synths are both Grp-3, what's to justify the higher cost of the Supreme?

I have used M1 since the car was new and have experience oil burning. As I've just completed an ARX clean-rinse phase, I thought I'd try something else. Car is 135,000 kms and in excellent condition.

==============================================

Around here, Delo in quarts costs more than Chevron in quarts.
