Defunt stores

seems wherever a Service Merchandise was, it was next to a Toys R Us.
I remember the thrill we got going on vacation in PA from NY and buying clothes at Ames, no sales tax on clothes in PA (still isn't!) while sales tax on everything in Long Island was always 7 or 8% or higher for as long as I remember.
was surprised recently when I took a trip back to LI, lots of the old independent stores on Main St were still in business, like a real independent butcher! not a meat dept in a supermarket, but a real butcher, haven't seen one of them in ages!

Anybody remembers Lechmere? I must have bought a *lot* of stuff from them!

Notice something missing in the list? Grocery stores rarely show up in that list! In my town, Market Basket just opened a spanking new one, no more than 1/8 miles from the old one. The old one will be open for at least until 2016. My town certainly can support two grocery stores but I was hoping to have another chain to have some competition. Unfortunately, I suspect Market Basket owns the town or at least probably has compromising pictures of the select board members :-)

I used to spend a lot time at Gemco when I was kid. Closest store to me and in bike range.

Later it was taken over by Target.

Most of all those stores were in New Jersey..All were very good stores to deal with unlike the garbage stores [like BrandsMart in South Florida] today.

Yes, all of those except Korvettes I remember. Dont recall shopping in TwoGuys, but my parents did and had a lot of stuff from there.

I was looking on Flikr, as there are a lot of great albums that show the old stores in various shopping centers and what they were, even some old time pics... Its great. Apparently many of the Korvettes became K-marts.

There were a couple of Korvettes around my area (ALWAYS loved that name when I was young, as I expected to walk in there and see big block C2s all lined up and shiny!

)

I used to always shop at Two Guys (originally called Two Guys From Harrison), and they made a KILLING in commercial real estate with all of the holdings/property they owned under the Vornado name.

There were actually TWO Service Merchandise stores in my town in the late '70s - mid '80s!

There are still some A&Ps open in my area, and one is a very high zoot/premium/'semi-gormet' type of supermarket.
