Changed the oil today on my 00' Honda CRV. Decided to do it early at 4k. Upon unscrewing the oil filter I found very little oil in it. Maybe a quarter cup. And this I believe is the oil I put in filter upon installing it. I stuck my finger in the oil tube that the filter thread on and it was dry. It's a wix gold filter from napa. The oil that i drained amelled of fuel and was the color of a black and tan. (Black and brown) Anyone ever have this issue with wix? On this oil change I ran napa synthetic. Could there be any damage to enigine. I'm going to send the oil out for analysis to make sure. And I'll be contacting wix about the filter.

Welcome to Bitog. The filter might be bad, but the oil filter would have nothing to do with the oil smelling like fuel.

I used a case of Napa Golds and never had a problem in my 03 CRV. You purchased the filter at Napa so, I believe, the store is who you will be dealing with for any potential claim. I hope you kept your oil filter purchase receipt.
If there is any damage to your engine as a result of the oil filter, Napa's liability insurance should pick up the tab and then get reimbursed by Wix.

Are you saying that you drove 4000 miles with the filter blocking the oil flow? Nope no way.the filter simply drained out before you unscrewed it.

I've also unscrewed several oil filters and has little - none oil come out ( where as previously, with the same model oil filter, tons of oil would come gushing out as the filter is being removed)

Chris142: I drove 4,000 miles on this oil filter. The oil filter mounting plate was dry. The car had been driven for at least 20 miles and then was parked for about thirty minutes before I took the oil filter off. I work at the napa in which I purchased the filter from. I've worked for napa for almost ten years now and this is the first time Ive seen this from a wix filter.
Unless it has a bypass in the block, there is no way oil couldn't go through the filter without doing major damage and you knowing it.

This is another puzzling comment. Did you cut the filter open? Or did this 8 oz (1/4 cup) just drain out of the center hole upon removal? - if so, that's about normal.
You make it sound like you pre-filled the filter, and you think the oil you put in it just stays there?
