My Rogue has been rattling on startup since the last dealer oil change. swapped out the Genuine Nissan filter with a Pennzoil Platinum filter and the problem is gone.
I'm a little surprised. FWIW, the Nissan filter is made in Mexico and both filters have louvers.

We used to take oil filters for granted - that any of them were probably good enough. not anymore....

Anything can be genuinely defective, that's why even the most robust reputation companies have warranties. Of course, Nissan is not known for above average reliability, and sometimes that is a systemic problem.

Since genuine filters are made by major filter makers, they're likely to suffer from similar quality issues as any other filter made by the same manufacturers.

Glad you got the problem resolved. Here's hoping you don't get blamed for causing the problem and then get put on ignore for questioning the absurd accusation like I was when I posted about a sub standard Bosch filter I cut open.

Being a mass produced item most any filter brand can suffer a defect from time to time, even an OEM. Gohner is the manufacturer of the Nissan oil filter and the anecdotes have shown a silicone adbv, so your anecdote is a little more surprising than ones using nitrile. Iirc, first anecdote like this I've seen for the Nissan OEM.

That said, you did the wise and logical thing imo, changed brands and problem solved.

It is fairly unrelated but I am starting to actually horde Wix 57356 filters when I can grab them at the jobber for around 6$ each.

My backup plan is FRAM if in the future I get desperate.

We are running low on sources of quality well built oil filters, and the louver thing and Mexico is turning me to Wix, only when it says Gastonia NC on the can.

Even Wix is going to Mexico, hopefully the cut and posts reveal the quality is the same.

I went to the V8 Gohner truck filter see my sig. If you think noise is bad, wait till winter.

Rec you use magnetec SS on this engine. You have the new 0w20 motor with rollers? If not use 30 grade otw knock knock knock goes the crank and rods.

well I guess you can say the ADBV was a Gonher

Good one!!!!

I'm a little surprised a certain poster didn't tell the OP it was his fault.

I actually witnessed the opposite situation happen when I used to be the parts man at a Nissan dealer.
Customer brought in a car complaining about a loud ticking noise, it had a quick lube Pennzoil filter on it. We did an oil change and installed a Nissan filter and the noise was gone.
I cut a few Gonher made Nissan filters open from my wife's last Quest van and 1 from her current Quest.
I though they looked pretty well made. silicone ADBV, metal endcaps, and a decent amount of media.
Much better looking than the previous made in China Nissan filters.
Never had any issues with them myself, maybe you just got a bad one.

The Gonher are good. I just use the larger one. The Nissan Chinese filters were engine killers.

see my sig below. Tried a lot of good OEM ( Hyundai Elantra Mann Hummel, Honda S2000 FILTECH) and settled on the big GONHER. The Honda is great though mucho expensivo!

I agree the newer Gonher silicone adbv filter looks better the made in China Nissan oem pictured below that I used (dealer installed shorty). That said, in my case it wasn't the filter which really doesn't look too bad, that killed the 2.5L engine. No, it was Nissan's ticking time bomb [censored] precats that killed it.

My #1 issue with the china FILTERS was mere thousandths clearance around the endcaps for flow.

I RECALL READING ABOUT THE CAST DISENTIGRATING AND GETTING PULLED BACK INTO THE EX.

funny SAME THING HA[PPENED WITH ACCORDS. KILLER COMBO CLOSE CATS/ vvt/ AND GARBAGE FUEL.

MY 25 HAS THE CAT A SHORTY HEADER AWAY. MY HONDA FIOT HAD CAT BOLTED TO THE CYL HEAD!

NOW THATS CLOSE!!!

Wow.

a) I have in front of me a Honda TSB re: excessive oil usage related to VVT timing and catalyst material scoring cyl walls causing excessive usage.

b) My Honda FIT had NO exhaust manifold, the catalyst inlet is attached to cyl head DIRECTLY.

IIRC GM new dohc V6 is this way.

c) Nissan (china) OE service filters had maybe 10 to 15 thousandths " DIA. clearance around the upper fiber end cap to canister.

any of this non-factual?

NO.

Sounds like the Nissan 4-cylinder issue (that Sayjac experienced) where the exhaust valves sucked back broken off catalytic converter material back in to the cylinders which scored them and smoked the engine.

Manufacturers are trying to get the cats as close as possible to the exhaust port to make them heat up fast and hot to meet emissions standards. Little do they know that engines being destroyed was one of the consequences.
