Can anyone suggest a good quality auotomobile mounted deer whislt that will scare the deer away. I hit a deer two years ago and don't want to do that again. Firstly, I good a good deal on a used, low-mileage Impala. I want it to last a long time. Secondly, my Dodge Grand Caravan that I purchased new five years ago is getting up there in miles (123K) and at this point, I want to see how far it will go.

University of Geogia Study
Researchers at the University of Georgia concluded that deer whistles mounted on cars did not produce ultrasonic sound that was audible to deer, although low frequencies were produced when the whistle was blown orally. The Georgia Game and Fish Department found that after observing several hundred incidents in which cars carrying deer whistles approached deer, they did not react.
University of Wisconsin
A study conducted by the University of Wisconsin concluded that deer did not respond to the whistles, even when drivers were well within the quarter-mile limit designated by manufacturers. Anything blocking the signal of the whistle that stood between it and the deer would also impede the deer from receiving it. According to the study, the whistle did produce an ultrasonic sound at speeds of more than 30 mph, but there was no evidence indicating that the deer heard it.
Farm Journal
A 1993 Farm Journal article indicated that Ohio State Police had little success when installing deer whistles on their vehicles, as there was no measurable decrease in the number of collisions with deer and quoted a study conducted by World Society of the Protection of Animals as saying that the whistles were ineffective when keeping deer or other animals from traversing a highway, rendering the whistles useless.

Besides, it too stinking cold to whistle at deer. Man, have you tried sitting on the hood at 60mph in 16F weather. It's hard to even pucker much less whistle.

Go get the ones at Wally World or your local auto parts store. They will work fine.

How you mount them is more important. Many put them on top of their bumpers but in front of other body work in somewhat of a wind lull.

The best spot would be the roof about a couple inches back from the top of the windscreen. But that would look goofy.

Many years ago, when I used to ride motorcycles much faster than I do now, deer whistles came up in conversation with a California Highway Patrol officer. He had them on his car, they were trying them with half of their cars having them. He said that the cars with them hit just as many deer as those without.

Guy I used to work with installed the whistles on his truck since from work to his country home he had too many close calls.
Almost a week after after he installed the whistles he got a deer. Got his truck fixed, then a couple nights later hit another. He kept the whistles off after the 2nd collision repair.

Those have been proven not to work. Peter Scheifele, an animal bioacoustics researcher, did a study (somewhere around 2001 or 2002) that clearly proved the range and volume produced by the deer whistles were inaudible to deer. Bottom line was, even if they made a sound that was audible to deer, the volume is so low that it's covered up by the road and drivetrain noise of the vehicle.

You're best bet is to simply pay close attention when deer are active.

Google "Peter Scheifele deer whistle" and I suspect you'll find a link to the research that proves they don't work.

I know! Get one of those tornadoes that was supposed to get better mileage a few years ago and mount that on the bumper.
