Okay, after reading everything here, you guys have convinced me to chnage to Mobile 1 Extended Performace 5W-30.

Now, I have a new (1,650 miles) 2004 Nissan Frontier XE V6 Crew Cab. I ran Castrol GTX from 500 miles to 1,000 miles, and then I switched to Amsoil 5w-30. If I change now to M do I need to flush or anything, or just drain and change?

What?

Keep the oil you have in the crankcase until it needs to be changed.

Only foolish people dump perfectly good amsoil down the drain.

Reality check.

Who convinced you to change? I haven't seen any long use UOA's on M1 EP yet. I couldn't make a decision on this oil until I saw some numbers.

And by all means, don't dump the Amsoil until at least 4,000 miles. If this wasn't such a new engine, I would run it out as far as the warrenty would let me.

Amsoil has had their 25,000 mile/1 year formulations on the market for a number of years:

10w-40, introduced in 1972 - First API approved (SE/CC) synthetic engine oil on the market

10w-30, introduced in 1984

5w-30, introduced in 1992

In other words, the Amsoil formulations have been proven by hundreds of millions of miles of actual use, under all sorts of conditions.

BTW, I fully expect the Mobil 1, EP formulations will work as advertised in terms of durability - but I'm not yet convinced they will outperform the old Mobil 1, GF-3 formulation when it comes to valve train and ring/cylinder wear.

Tooslick

I think it is just a waste to dump oil like this prematurely for no good reason.

Big waste of money.

You can just drain and change, but as others have mentioned, may as well get at least 4K-5K miles out of the oil that's in there, then do a oil and filter change.

I'd recommend keeping what you've got in there until you intended to change it anyway.

It didn't stop being a good oil just because M1 EP turned up.

I know how Mulaka feels. Sometimes you are just itching to get a new oil in the crankcase, but yeah, the Amsoil is very good and, unless you have another car to transfer it to, I would run it out a full OCI.

If you put the M1 EP stuff in there you will still have to follow manufacturers reccommended oil change interval anyway,so I would use regular M1...Assuming when you said the EP you were refering to the 15k oil..

Leave the Amsoil in.

We all love to put the best oil we can in our vehicles.
However the bottomline is whether you use Amsoil,Mobil 1 EP,Shaeffer,Castrol Synthetic etc, your vehicle will easily get 200+K mileage if changed properly.
People get that mileage on dino oil.

Smart move when Mobil sales are everywhere & discount stores like Wal-Mart carry it cheaper at regular price. Personally, I can't see paying that Amsoil price when Mobil will get you to 300K & not cleanout your wallet doing so.

Mulaka,

Stick with the Amsoil ASL 5w-30; it has shown good #s in Used Oil Analysis on Nissan V6s. Since the vehicle is fairly new, a 5K interval would be my vote because of break in wear metals. Nissans tend to like a thicker 30 weight like Amsoil versus the thinner Mobil 1.

I am not convinced the Mobil 1 EP is going to be any better than the comparable grade Amsoil for extended drain runs.

My vote is to stay with Amsoil. It gives that cushion of protection and also like Pablo says the price is right there with Mobil EP and even cheaper!!!

I'm not sure why you decided M1 5W-30 would be a best choice for your Nissan truck, especially if you work it hard or tow?

By all means follow your warranty requirements on such a new vehicle, but check Mobil 1's website and consults sponsor's to see if M1 0W-40 or ATM 10W-30 might not be more appropriate.
GC 0W-30 perhaps? I'm not so sure that a thin 5W-30 is best for this engine.

John In The ATL,

If you keep making statements like that, you'll be accused of being a heretic and burned in oil ...

As for cost, the preferred customer price of the Amsoil 5w-30/10w-30/10w-40 is now less than the Mobil 1, Extended Performance formulations at most retail outlets. However, the idea that you'll be saving gobs of money by using one or the other is really just too stupid to comment on. Oh geez, it seems like I just did...

I do not understand your post. I pay less for Amsoil as a preffered customer than Mobil 1 at Walmart.....
