So admittedly I’ve never paid as much attention to oil filters as I have, the oil itself.
When I started hanging around here about 15 years ago, I just looked around and most people said the Fram Ultra was very good, as was the M1. I remember Purolator Pure One was also thought of pretty well back when they were yellow. I even used these on my 2007 Yamaha R1 back in my sportbike riding days.
So I would always just use whatever everyone said was a pretty decent oil filter. And over the last few years, that was the Fram Ultra. It was easy to get, relatively inexpensive, and it was usually on the shelf at Walmart and I’d just grab one when I got my oil.
But recently I’ve seen some posts that they’ve cheapened them, and although the efficiency is still good (aren’t they still 99% at 20 micron), they no longer have the wire-backed fully synthetic media, and I think I read something about paper end caps.
So after reading some posts, I saw that a lot of y’all are liking the Premium Guard EX (aka Carquest Premium, Microgard sold through O’Reilly’s, and a couple more). I watched a video where a guy did a C&P on one and it looked beautiful inside with metal end cap, silicone ADBV, and an actual coil spring internal bypass valve.

I was in AAP getting some new spark plugs for the Tacoma today (heck of a deal on the OEM Denso plugs at <$5/ea there), and decided to pick one up for my next OCI on the Tacoma. It was about $10. A dollar more than the Fram Ultra at Walmart.
But from what I’m gathering from reading on here, maybe a bit better made than the FU?
I won’t be subjecting it to any very hard abuse, but it may be in service for as long as a year on the Taco, along with M1 0W-40 FS oil. Since I got the Elantra N, the Tacoma is not being driven as much anymore. Maybe 7-8000 miles per year. I last changed the oil/filter last June and I haven’t yet hit 7000 miles on the OCI.
