debit card transactions

I have found this to be a regional thing. On the east coast/mid atlantic area, I never get asked for ID. West coast I get asked about 90% of the time.

I understand the reasoning behind checking IDs, but there are situations when a person is legally, with permission, using a card without their name on it. For example, sometimes I use my friend's debit card if he needs me to pick something up for him or whatever. My name isn't on the card, but I know the PIN, and I have permission to use it. Likewise, I have had jobs where I had to use a company or my boss' card that also did not have my name on them.

I respectfully disagree. I think it's an example of a store proactively protecting their customers.

No, they are protecting themselves. A customer whose card is used fraudulently will most probably receive a refund - even though the laws talks about credit cards only, most banks with goodwill will do that for their debit card holders. The banks then try to recoup the funds from the merchants, sometimes successfully.

Tell me about it. Once I forgot my access card at home and asked a colleague, who used to have a cubicle close to where I was and had conversations with her, to let me in. She refused me.

I can't remember the last time I was asked for ID using a debit card. Plus nowadays you can buy gas at the pump without going inside and paying.

The one thing I do notice is that some gas stations add 4 to 8 cents a gallon if you don't use cash. Also some pumps will have in fine print a debit fee added to the transaction.

Seriously, do those people get upset when a police officer asks for ID? Do they assume the cop thinks they're a crook because of this? Get a grip people!!

Not a very good analogy but yes, if you are minding your business and a cop asks for an ID then one might be upset about it.

Doesn't bother me, except when they want my license out(bars/clubs). SOB is hard to take out of that plastic sleeve thingy.

X2. Unless I was doing something illegal, I would be upset if a cop asked for my ID. "Protect and serve" does not include harass.

I agree as well. It's a horrible analogy. If a LEO asked me for ID without any cause, I would be upset.

The two LEOs in my family would both be very upset if a colleague were to engage in that sort of hassling of citizens.

So you guys get all upset when you fly? They ask to see your ID before boarding a plane. It's exactly the same analogy as asking for ID when making a purchase: they want to ensure you are who you claim you are.

it is ridiculous for you to ask for ID. For all I know the shopkeeper can be crooked and
(a) take a hidden photo of their ID presented
(b) skim their card and get their pin

and conduct some nice identity theft.

So as a consumer paying with a debit card I would walk straight out if you asked me for ID to use one...

being asked for ID by a cop is slightly different than being asked for it when I am using MY money to buy MY goods.

Your card pin identifies you.

if someone stole your card and knows your pin, there are other ways to handle it. they have no interest in protecting me, only selling stuff.
