Why do so many people get upset when I ask to see id?? And when I tell I have too they say I know the PIN. Well lady or sir, what if someone took you debit card and knew your PIN? Came to my shop and bought $200 worth of stuff?? And I cash it threw without checking id just becuz they know the pin. How are you going to feel? STUPID and wish I checked it. If your paying with plastic ima need to see your ID SIR/MAM

My rant

People are so stupid, they take it PERSONALLY. I'm HAPPY when they ask for my ID because they're doing the RIGHT thing and DOING their job.

I always thank the cashier for checking my ID. I tell them that if every retail outlet did that, debit and credit card fraud would just about go to zero. From the look on their faces, they must get more negative than positive responses from the public. Too bad all stores don't do that.

Asking for an ID assumes that the person standing in front of you is a crook - not the most pleasant way of being treated. That's why people get upset.

Doesn't bother me in the least, in fact I appreciate it. I've had some strange things happen to me, plastic-wise, so I like to know at least THIS transaction is on the up & up!!

What really gripes me is the one company credit card I carry has, in big red letters, PHOTO ID REQUIRED, yet very seldom do people ask me for ID!?!?

I'm with you. When I worked at the bank during summer, people would get PO'ed when I asked for ID. I'd always get the "I've banked here for 30 years - I'm insulted you asked me" routine....

I used to write "please see id" on the back of my credit card instead of signing. In about 15 years of doing that, only one person asked.

finalyzd, check your merchant's agreement to see what the rule about IDs is.

The likely rule is that you may ask for ID, but the customer may decline and you are still obliged to conduct the transaction.

A lot of people know this and think that stores that give them the ID runaround are just being needlessly disrespectful.

Official VISA position:

Merchants may not refuse to honor a Visa card simply because the cardholder refuses a request for supplementary information. The only exception is when a Visa card is unsigned when presented. However, “See ID” is not considered a valid signature. In these situations, a merchant must obtain authorization, review additional identification, and require the cardholder to sign the card before completing a transaction.

To report any merchant practices that you feel are inappropriate, please notify the disputes area at the financial institution that issued your card account. Your card issuing bank has access to the appropriate Visa rules and regulations as well as to the Notification of Customer Complaint forms which should be used by your bank to document and file merchant complaints.

As an alternative, you may contact the Global Customer Care Services to report merchant practices that you feel are inappropriate. Please contact the Global Customer Care Services at 1-800-VISA-911 (1-800-847-2911). Please advise them that you were referred to file a complaint. The staff will be able to initiate a complaint form over the phone.

Yeah the two things I see portrayed as stores' rules which are NOT are:
-Asking (demanding) ID for a transaction
-Requiring a minimum purchase price for a card to be used

I know they are doing the "right thing" in a way by asking for the ID. Especially for a debit card directly linked to your account. It shouldnt strike people as rude or mean or bad, but it does, I think because folks feel as if their trust and goodstanding is violated. Same thing when carding folks who are over 21 for alcohol - a lot of times folks get annoyed by it - because they are 21 and are treated as liars.

I am mainly annoyed at being asked to show a receipt. They are claiming I am a crook before there is any good reason.

In the end, what ive seen on the east coast is that asking for ID and asking for receipts are typically performed at certain stores in certain areas with a certain demographic set. I avoid all that, I avoid the hassles.

I respectfully disagree. I think it's an example of a store proactively protecting their customers.

I only get it at walmart, and only when the central computer prompts the cashier. I refuse. As said above, it goes against the CC mercantile agreement.

I have not yet seen them bother to "reposess" my cart full of stuff.

I figure middle management tells the clerks it's "the law" when they themselves are misguided.

WM would prefer to hassle CC customers, I assume as they lose less money to bank fees with debit cards. If one swipes a dual purpose debit/credit the terminal "knows" and prompts for pin.

Got ruder service at my bank, signed a check for cash right in front of the teller and she gave me grief for my signature not exactly matching my license. (I "streamlined" it over the years.) She couldn't be bothered to look up my signature card, her legal basis for identification.

If you were processing my debit card transaction as credit, or running my credit card as a credit transaction, I would be totally fine with you asking to see my ID. If I was using my debit card for a pin based debit transaction, and you asked to see my ID, I would get ticked off. If I were a thief and had a stolen debit card that I knew the pin number for, I wouldn't go shopping at a retail establishment, I'd find and atm and take all your cash

I will look into that. I'm happy if someone asks me. One thing that irritates me but won't show it , is when I pay in cash and they put the bill to the light to see if its a fake. And next person in line pays with cash also they don't check there's. Not trying to say race is involved :)

Never heard of ID being required for debit card transactions here. I would refuse anyways. My signature on my card has long worn off and there is no name indented on the card, so what are you going to verify with? ID for large credit card purchases I have heard though. Why go to a retail store if you have a stolen debit or credit card, just use it to do online purchases, lol

It's not a condition of acceptance that an id should be shown. In fact, in some states it is illegal to even ask.

One Walmart I've gone to does it every single time and I've told them that I don't need to show it but they just say they were told to. I even complained to Visa / Mastercard but nothing has changed.

I personally don't like it. There is nothing stopping the person you hand it to to be committing identity theft themselves since once they have your drivers license, they have your address and date of birth.
