Debit Card hacked

The ONLY PLACE I use my atm card is at MY BANK!

Twice, before I was educated on this. Fraud, both times, small amounts. Resolved with one phone call each for a total of 30 minutes.

Any time I use a card to make an in-person purchase or order online I use the credit card.

Decades ago I learned my lesson on credit card interest. No thanks. I always pay the full balance.

It's easy to buy a skimmer and pull the information from your card while standing in line etc. People post card numbers, and pins on forums .
If its as sensitive as the one on the atm in the bank, the card has to be very very close to it.

So then now we need to put the tin foil cap on our wallets?

It is supposed to be impossible to make a working duplicate card chip from skimmed numbers. All card present charges such as stores and ATMs are now supposed to validate the chip instead of merely reading the stripe. Did the OP's case involve a duplicate card?

Wait staff goes elsewhere to process your card, takes photo of it, runs you card and returns it to the table. Couple days later there is an alert or a charge for sneakers or something else. I've had it happen on a CC that isn't used often so I know when and where it happened not that anything would be done by complaining. Debit or credit it doesn't matter, its still a PITA when it happens.
I like now many restaurants have portable POS terminals and you can tap it at the table, card never leaves your hand.

I had it happen more times that I can post. But not in the last several years. It does matter if it is credit or debit. If it is debit you owe the money until you can prove that it wasnt you, if then.

If it is credit you owe nothing unless they can prove it was you. I just assume everyone accesses their accounts online. If when paying my credit card bills which are quite substantial since I do not use cash I see a charge that I didnt make. All it takes is a couple clicks of your mouse and the charge is removed. If they can prove it was you, like your signature you will owe it. If they cant prove it was you it will be removed.

This. Credit Cards never leave your sight when dining out in Europe.

IDK if it involved a 'duplicate' card but it must have since the thief had to insert something into the ATM I'm sure. My daughter never lost her card so most likely they used a duplicate.
