Dealership error - seeking advice (Caterham?!)

The only thing I said I was "afraid" of was the use of non-Honda ATF in the transmission. That's a separate issue for a different thread. There's already several of them out there, mostly on Honda specific forums, and I've read most of them.

I'm certainly not afraid of running Honda's recommended and dealership-provided oil making the car explode. The point is this:

I was excited about getting the Toyota 0w20 in the car because I recently learned the car had been (not so recently) back-spec'ed, did a ton of research (largely thru BITOG), and decided that was the best oil for my application. As I said, I was itching to ditch the Royal Purple SM 5w20 that I had in there, despite amazing UOA's because I wanted to run a lighter oil, especially now that winter's here.

200 miles after I scratched the itch, dumped the RP with 6100 short miles on it, and filled up with the Toyota 0w20, it was mistakenly dumped by the dealership. I didn't get to run it or analyze my results. My current dilemma (I'm satisfied with the dealer's honesty, apology, and credit, although I could certainly be more of a pain about it) is whether to avoid the job of lying in the snow to change the filter or not worry about the small amount of bulk 5w20 messing with my future UOA results. I did have a thought early on of just somehow thinning this oil down with an additive in order to achieve something closer to what I think is the optimal weight for my particualr situation, but I'm pretty well over that and committed to running at least 90% Toyota 0w20. Maybe I'll skip the UOA this time around and get the next change's results analyzed in about a year.

7 years or 105,000 miles. Had it done because it was due. Following the owner's manual. Car was built in January, 2005. And we all know what happens to interference engines when timing belts break.

The same things that happen to interference engines when timing chains break...

Usually.

A transmission cooler is usually not a bad idea, but normally not a problem unless in areas of extreme cold, which NJ is (typically) not.

Cheers!

p.s. "...paranoia strikes deep. Into your life it will creep. It starts when you're always afraid. Step out of grade, and the tech comes, and drains your 0W-20 away!"

I appreciate the reassurance on the transmission cooler (something I wasn't actually questioning when I started the thread)

and the much improved song lyric. Hope all the owners of the wide array of opinions presented in this thread have a great weekend.

Hi oiltard.

Sorry to hear your Honda dealer dumped your Toyota 0W-20 and replaced with some 5W-20.
Anyway, now that it's in your Honda, I'd run it for a full normal OCI. While not ideal there's no point wasting oil, the 5W-20 will be fine.

I'm sorry too! I guess maybe I'll run this stuff for 3k and call it a flush, while making sure to plug the car's block heater into the timer every night in the meantime. Just a letdown not to be running the oil I researched and hand-selected.

That's a nice touch of class! Good for you!

I do my changes when rain, shine or snow, so that part wouldn't stop me if I wanted to change it out but that's me. I'd probably leave it in for a reasonable OCI, it's not like it's going to hurt anything. But I do see where you're coming from and agree, that really sucks!

Which ever way you go, don't worry about all the opinions. Everyone's got one.

Block heater on a Honda in NJ? Concerns with 5W20? Right up there with the guy pulling the pan when he changes the oil.

Your oil filter's anti drain back valve will have much more influence on cold start wear than 5W-20 vs 0W-20 in NJ, assuming you have a canister filter of course. I live in NW NJ, the coldest part of the state and my 0 degree and below starts are whisper quiet on 5W-20 and 5w30 oil with quality filters.

Whimsey

Even at 32F the difference in viscosity between a 150 VI 5W-20 and the 216 VI Toyota 0W-20 is about 65% which is huge. That's the same difference as up to 3 oil grades assuming they have the same VIs.

Except the timing belt runs externally so there's no way to get internal engine contamination.
The oil change was a typical dealer padding of the work order.

Need not to worry so much, youll have a heart attack, if bulk oil makes you cringe change it out and to avoid this kind of trouble, do it yourself.

I agree completely - even if the oil weight was 5w30.
Leave it in the crankcase for 5K.

I'm going to be the contrarian.

Man up, go outside to dump the Honda 5W-20 oil, and put the stuff you want in there. You aren't out any money for doing it and you will feel better about running what you wanted to run.

If you cared enough to start a thread about it, then it will bother you the whole OCI while that 5W-20 is in there. Just do yourself a favor and go change it.

In my personal opinion, the 5W-20 will be fine, but life is about happiness. Go make yourself happy.

I'd be a little irritated that they dumped a fresh oil that I particularly wanted to use and put in some unknown bulk 5W-20.
Still, if they gave you a decent credit on your card, life goes on.
The engine will be fine on the 5W-20 they used for the next 5K or so.
Don't feel bad about the timing belt, either.
You won't need to worry about it again for the next 106K.
I would have left it after only 53K myself, even after seven years, but we both know that the consequences of timing belt failure are fatal to the engine.
