How do I determine the age on Mobil 1 quarts. My local Kmart has all Mobil1 on sale for 3.99 but it looks old. I noticed that the label on some of the quarts are different. I have a feeling since this store does a low volume that all the oil is old and some might even be older.

For example some of the oil has a printed label (sticker)and others have the label directly on the bottle (no sticker).

Is 3.99 a deal worth taking even if the oil is older? I am using it for my Commercial mower and I definitely have to use Synthetic 15-50- for the hydro oil, but this isn't a concern because it only gets changed once a year. But I am thinking of switching from Pensoil (Dino) to Mobil 1 at that price. At AutoZone etc. it is over $5.

Oil should be able to sit on the shelf for quite a while without a problem - I wouldn't hesitate to use it if it were at least SL.

What do you mean by quit a while

? This stuff might be pretty old. It has been on sale for a few weeks and it isn't moving. It is on sale until the 25th and I have been hoping they would sell this stuff and replenish with new, but every few days I go in and nobody is buying this stuff. I don't think they sell much oil at all.

If I decide to buy it though I will need to get another 7 months shelf life out of some of it. I will probably buy 16 quarts to get me through 8 oil changes this summer on my commercial mower.

I'm not kidding, this oil might be several years old. I noticed a little yellowing on the labels

Ok, I now know oil isn't going to go bad. What is the oil rating I should avoid? Meaning with new requirements/Advancements what rating would make this oil a bad deal.

My 27hp Kohler which is my newest motor calls for SG, SH, SJ, or higher. As you can tell, I am a laymen when it comes to oil and just want to do my engines right. I figured at $3.99 a quart it might be worth switching from regular 10-30 penzoil to the Mobil 1.

I also heard that you can buy Mobil 1 everyday at Walmart for this price or better in the 5 quart jug. I have not confirmed this yet.

My local WalMart sells Mobil-1 5w-40 (T&SUV formula) in a 5-quart jug for $20. I think all their "standard" Mobil-1 oils in the 5-quart jug are priced similarly. The Mobil-1 EP's are a bit more...something along the lines of $23 for a 5-quart jug.
