THERE are calls for Northern Territory man Sam Burt to be made father of the year in support of his old-fashioned punishment for his five-year-old son.

The Northern Territory News was flooded with messages from all over Australia in support of the father, who made his son Jack walk 13km to school with him every morning.

Jack had been kicked off the bus for five days after hitting a bus driver in the head with an apple core.

That's exactly the kind of creative, relevant, powerful, and safe punishment that most parents should strive to be able to do.

At this age, the kid will remember the trial of walking 2.5 hours to school every day, and he will have plenty of opportunity to think about what he did; when he gets older, he will realize by it how much his father cared for him.

Congrats you guys are now fully Americanized.

Next step, son sues parents and the state, son wins, and the state must pay millions for the next 20 years. You laugh.....

Not quite. Americanized would on the parent side whacking him silly w/charges and law suits..on the social side telling the parent that he should have had a reward system for favorable behaviors and was a failure himself when the kid threw the apple core.

While I'm sure there could be other examples that would challenge this guy's performance, taking that time to do that proves a substantial commitment to parenting, imo.

Wholly and heartily seconded.

oilBabe is a school social worker for elementary aged children and gives two thumbs up.

She said perhaps a bike ride would have been better, but when I reminded her that the father was with the child she agreed, it wasn't abuse and an effective punishment.

We only find out if it was effective punishment if the kid does not do the same behavior again. Of course, if the kids does, then he clearly should be riding the short bus to school. I love the idea and have actually used similar things with our kids (they walk home if they miss their scheduled rides but school is only 3 miles away). Most only miss their ride once.
