Cylinder Shorting With Rubber Hose.

How does this work? The rubber vacuum hose (looks to be about 4 in long in the picture) actually conducts the spark current through the rubber walls?

In high school I played a joke on my auto shop teacher. I replaced his coil wire with a vacuum hose. He drove the car home!

Note that the rubber hose is black in color. What makes it black?

The carbon black in the hose is the conductor

Didn't know about the carbon black. I am going to try this out on my truck.

A old trick to use rubber hose when hooking timing light up. You hook it to the hose thats between the cap and spark plug wire.

Was that with the old timing lights which did not have inductive pickups?

Ya know I don't remember. I was 14 and my first boss did this to every car he tuned up. Back then,1971,all cars were points type ignition, he said you got a better read of the plug firing. I'm pretty sure he clamped onto the vac hose, other wires to pos and neg at the battery. I'm showing my age.....
