The Murano is the newest addition to my stable. It has a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and 80K on the odometer. Factory information indicates the fluid is filled for life unless contamination is detected. Some owners say the fluid should be changed every 60K. The fluid is $10 per quart, and requires 11 qts for a complete exchange. I'm not too familiar with the internals of the transmission and whether it has any clutch packs. What are your feelings about CVT maintenance? I can't remember seeing a lot of discussion here on CVTs. How is their durability overall, compared with geared transmissions?

I would check with the dealer on their recommendations. A lot of the early Nissan CVTs had failures. Get the dealer to do the firdt transmission service. When it hits 150k then maybe try a drain and fill yourself.

I've heard that transmission shops don't want to touch CVTs, so rebuilds are almost non existent. Transmission failure would mean an expensive transmission replacement for big $$$ (at least in Canada).

Personally I would use the Amsoil Cvt fluid if the job itself was a DIY, otherwise find a dealership that will do it with oem fluid. You'd be surprised maybe but some dealers will do the same job cheaper even if they're close by.

I would have the dealer do it. I think it would be wise for a dealer to have a CVT transmission flush machine and a separate machine for the red stuff.

A member of my family got over 120K from his Murano CVT by doing this. The car ran fine, the only reason he traded it in was just to have a newer car.
