When will the mainstream oil companies come out with their own CVT fluid? I might be buying a 07 Altima with the CVT. I don't know what Nissan charges a quart for this stuff. I know their Matic D is way over priced. I could imagine the price for the CVT will be.

I would assume the oil companies would have to make it under license from the manufactures. Are all CVT fluids a like?

I have a Ford CVT. From my study I would ONLY use 'exactly' what is specified even out of warranty. I would also check for any TSB's for updates to my manual. (technical service bulletins). They are unlikely to be inter-changable any time soon.

Less than $20/qt for the Nissan fluid from what I've read. About 6-7/qt for a drain and refill. Actually, all of the Nissan CVTs have a fluid life monitor that is only accessible using a diagnostic tool. But rarely does the unit need a fluid change before 200k, at least technically.

Thats because it'll be replaced 2-3 times before that 200k.
Fluid life monitor is a joke.

Stick with the OEM fluid until more substitutes are available.

Wise decision.
I attended a Ford presentation about two years ago on that transmission, and the guy stated "the unit was designed to operate on the designed fluid and to fail on any other." Hence the black (not yellow) dipstick handle hidden under some hoses and plastic cover.

CVT fluid has special "traction" chemistry that no other transmission fluid contains.

For now, you'll have to stay with the factory fluid.

Don't know too much about CVT's. Says it is recomended. I purchased a case for 1/2 the price of Amsoil.

kazual,

So, do you work for Amalie? You reply to every ATF post with Amalie in it. Show me a UOA of this stuff or heck even a VOA. Otherwise, you are a troll.

We are using Eneos in fleet service for some Honda Civic Hybrids and some Nissans. Don't use ordinary atf. We tested a couple of different CVT fluids and are willing to pay for the Eneos, it performed well. We are worried that these CVT's are a weak link in the maintenance.

According to Wiki Eneos is Nippon oil corp which is part of the Mitsubishi Group.I was told by a Mitsubishi mechanic in Odessa Tx they are the supplier of CVT fluid for them. The only reason I posted it was it seemed to be the only CVT put out by a large company.

One-size-fits-all is generally not a good thing when it comes to a fluid like this.

NO, I DO NOT WORK FOR AMALIE. I LIVE IN CONNECTICUT NOT FLORIDA. I CAME ACROSS A CASE OF THE STUFF AT A REASONABLE PRICE OF ABOUT $4 A QUART, CHECKED ON THE SPECS AND HERE I AM.

I am currently running a mix of T-IV and Amalie Universal(did a pan drain on my 2005 Rav 4) and so far shifts the same as T-IV. The wife and I are going on a trip to Maine and I will let you guys know if the ATF performs well or changes color.
