Hello,

I went for an alignment with a 1990 toyota corolla. Mechanic says alignment cant be done because 2 of cv joint boots are torn and because the steering rack has some play in it. What kind of gease should i get for cv joints? Ive seen white lithium grease.

I have also seen chevron starplex ep2 grease though on spec sheet it says not recommended for cv joints

Cheers

Don't use white lithium grease that stuff is light duty use only.

Toyota OEM stuff at least for some years was shell stamina which is now gadus t3 100 I believe. Phillips polytac and Chevron black pearl are very similar.

All that said you have more than that wrong. Your going to have to get the rack fixed anyway it'll be easier to replace the rack and the axle and be done with it just like mk378 said.

I read on a toyotanation.com forum that the outer cv joints on toyotas around that time used moly grease so i got a tube of delo moly ep 2 for the outer cv joints. The inner cv joints use a different grease than outer cv joints. For the inner cv joints grease i posted in grease section of forum

Delo moly grease says not recomended for cv joints. Why?

The inner and outer joints in most CV shafts are entirely different with the inner usually not being a constant velocity type but a tripod joint. I believe that polyurea type grease is normally used in tripod joints.

@ripcord thanks so i could probably get away with using delo starplex ep 2 on inner cv joints

Is synthtic grease better than mineral based grease?

I like the delo and mobil products as they are name brand, though synthtic grease supposedly resists high temps better and repels water more. I havent heard of this top1 brand until now it is made in the usa

Well, I wouldn't take my word for it as I'm no expert :) That said, I see that delo starplex ep 2 is a lithium complex grease, not a polyurea based grease. Whatever you choose, I'm fairly sure that you do not want to use moly type grease on tripod joints.

Ha! Just noticed that there was a different thread going on right now on the same subject. You might want to jump over to that one as the guys on there should be able to set you right.

Edit: I see it's you replying to that old thread, LOL

Actually just checked and the grease i got was chevron moly ep 2 not delo moly m2, yay, according tonwhat the spec cheet https://shop.sclubricants.com/pub/m...ron-Moly-Greases-EP-2-Technical-Datasheet.pdf says there is no message saying that the chevron moly ep 2 cant be used on cv joint, so it will go on the outer cv joints rzeppa type which require moly grease.

I wonder if tripod cv joints do well with white lithium grease, if they do i could use mobil xhp 222 on the inner cv joints

Cheers jorge

@Jorge, if you replace the torn CV joint boots (rather than replacing the entire drive shafts), the replacement boots should come with the appropriate grease provided in a separate packet.

Are you replacing the CV joints too? Are they making any noise?

Per our BITOG driveline expert @Trav, the factory drive axles will typically be of much better quality than new replacement units, and therefore you're better off replacing the individual CV joints than replacing the entire axle.

If you're not comfortable replacing the CV joints, you may find a good local driveline specialist who will rebuild your axles for you.

The replacement boots didnt come with the grease.

I am replacing just the boots as supposedly th cv joints are fine.

Arg, that's frustrating!

In your position, I would be worried about grease compatibility. That is, I would not want the old grease to contaminate the new grease, causing the new grease to break down. (I presume that because the old boots were damaged, at least some of the original grease was lost and the remaining original grease is contaminated with dirt or water. Therefore, I would want to clean out as much of the old grease as possible - rags followed by WD40?)

I can't say what a good replacement grease for CV joints would be though - hoping our experts will weigh in here. (I replaced the entire tripod joint about three months ago, and the new joint and boot came with a packet of grease.)

I got 2 gallons of diesel to clean the cv joint grease. I went with chevron moly ep 2 for the outer cv rzeppa type joints and mobil xhp 222 for the inner tripod type joints.

damaged right steering rack mount bushing. I would assume this is what the alignment guy said might affect the alignment. Right bushing is damaged, left looks good.

I found the right side and left side steering bushing at toyota dealer

Who is the oem supplier for toyota steering rack bushings?
